Electron Dynamics and Correlations in the High-order Harmonic Generation, Photoelectron Circular Dichroism, and Spin Polarization Phenomena
The interaction of ionizing laser radiation with atoms and molecules can give rise to many fascinating phenomena. Among them, the high-order harmonic generation (HHG), the photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD), and spin polarization (SP) phenomena have attracted a lot of scientific interest since their first observation or prediction in the 1970s.
The generation of high-order harmonics can be observed if laser pulses with high intensities
and large wavelengths interact with matter. The HHG spectra are usually described in
a single active electron (SAE) approximation, which neglects many-electron dynamics and
correlations. Here, the influence of the many-electron dynamics and correlations on the
HHG in Beryllium atom was studied theoretically. To enable this investigation, a necessary
development of the time-dependent restricted-active-space configuration-interaction
method was performed in the course of the present dissertation.
The PECD consists in an enantio- and helicity-dependent forward-backward asymmetry
of photoelectrons which are emitted from chiral molecules by the absorption of circularly
polarized photons, and it is defined with respect to the light propagation direction. The
size of the PECD can be optimized by sequences of narrowband pulses in a coherent
control scheme. The rise of coherent broadband laser pulses opens up a new way for
coherent control. In this work, a possibility to control the multiphoton PECD by using a
single coherent broadband laser pulse was studied theoretically. To manage this task in
a reasonable computation time, an efficiency optimization of the time-dependent singlecenter
(TDSC) method was performed. A SP of electrons can be achieved, e.g., in photoionization processes which make use of circularly polarized light. This effect was first predicted in the one-photon ionization regime. Recently, a large SP has been measured in the multiphoton ionization of Xenon atoms and chiral 1-Iodo-2-Methylbutane molecules. In order to explain these experimental findings theoretically, the spin-orbit interaction was incorporated into the TDSC method. The improved method was tested in the multiphoton ionization of Xenon atom and further applied to the spin-resolved multiphoton PECD of 1-Iodo-2-Methylbutane.
