Double photoionization of argon into the {3s3p^5} {^1P}- and {^3P}-states
(1994)
Double photoionization of argon was studied
by photon induced fluorescence spectroscopy (PIFS). Cross sections for the double photoionization into the {3s3p^5} {^1P}, {^3P} states of Ar^{+ +} are presented for exciting photon energies between threshold and 120 eV. In the threshold range the energy dependencies of these cross sections were determined for the first time. Singlet and triplet states are populated with comparable probabilities at equal excess energies, in contrast to predictions of the extended Wannier ...

Precision laser spectroscopy of the ground state hyperfine splitting of hydrogenlike ^209 Bi^82+
(1994)
The first direct observation of a hyperfine splitting in the optical regime is reported. The wavelength of the M1 transition between the F = 4 and F = 5 hyperfine levels of the ground state of hydrogenlike ^209 Bi^82+ was measured to be \lamda_0 = 243.87(4) nm by detection of laser induced fluorescence at the heavy-ion storage ring ESR at GSI. In addition, the lifetime of the laser excited F = 5 sublevel was determined to be \tau_0 = 0.351(16) ms. The method can be applied to a number of other nuclei and should allow ...

Photoionization of Kr near the 4s threshold: IV. Photoionization through the autoionization of doubly-excited states
(1994)
The photoionization cross sections for the production of the Kr II 4s state and Kr II satellite states were studied in the 4s ionization threshold region. The interference of direct photoionization and ionization through the autoionization decay of doubly-excited states was considered. In the calculations of doubly-excited state energies, performed by a configuration interaction technique, the 4p spin-orbit interaction and the (Kr II core)-(excited electron) Coulomb interaction were included. The theoretical cross ...

Photoionization of Kr near 4s threshold: II. Intermediate-coupling theory
(1994)
The Kr 4s-electron photoionization cross section as a function of the exciting-photon energy in the range between 30 eV and 90 eV was calculated using the configuration interaction (CI) technique in intermediate coupling. In the calculations the 4p spin-orbital interaction and corrections due to higher orders of perturbation theory (the so-called Coulomb interaction correlational decrease) were considered. Energies of Kr II states were calculated and agree with spectroscopic data within less than 10 meV. For some of ...

Fluorescence studies on the 3d-ionization threshold range in krypton
(1994)
Krypton atoms were excited by photons in the energy range from the threshold for photoionization of the 3d-electrons up to 120 eV. and the fluorescence radiation in the spectral range from 780 to 965 A was observed and analyzed. Cross sections for the population of excited states in KrIII with at least one 4s-hole resulting from an Auger transition as the first decay step and for KrII satellites were determined. The energy dependence of the 3d-ionization cross section in the 3d{_5/2}- and the 3d{_3/2}-threshold range ...

Absolute Kr 4s-electron photoionization cross sections between 30 and 90 eV measured by photon-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (PIFS)
(1994)
Absolute Kr 4s-electron photoionization cross sections as a function of the exciting-photon energy between 30 and 90 eV were measured by photon-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (PIFS). The measurements were compared with available experimental data and theoretical calculations.

Slave-boson approach to the size-dependent transition from van der Waals to covalent bonding in Hg_n clusters
(1994)
We use a microscopic theory to describe the dynamics of the valence electrons in divalent-metal clusters. The theory is based on a many-body model Harniltonian H which takes into account, on the same electronic level, the van der Waals and the covalent bonding. In order to study the ground-state properties of H we have developed an extended slave-boson method. We have studied the bonding character and the degree of electronic delocalization in Hg_n clusters as a function of cluster size. Results show that, for ...

The electronic structure of anionic halide complexes of element 105 in aqueous solutions and their extraction by aliphatic amines
(1994)
To study the complex formation of group 5 elements (Nb, Ta, Ha, and pseudoanalog Pa) in aqueous HCI solutions of medium and high concentrations the electronic structures of anionic complexes of these elements [MCl_6]^-, [MOCl_4]^-, [M(OH)-2 Cl_4]^-, and [MOCl_5]^2- have been calculated using the relativistic Dirac-Slater Discrete-Variational Method. The charge density distribution analysis has shown that tantalum occupies a specific position in the group and has the highest tendency to form the pure halide complex, ...

Thermodynamic functions of element 105 in neutral and ionized states
(1994)
The basic thermodynamic functions, the entropy, free energy, and enthalpy, for element 105 (hahnium) in electronic configurations d^3 s^2, d^3 sp, and d^4s^1 and for its +5 ionized state (5f^14) have been calculated as a function of temperature. The data are based on the results of the calculations of the corresponding electronic states of element 105 using the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method.
