Preformal proving: examples and reflections
(1991)
The starting point of our reflections is a classroom situation in grade 12 in which it was to be proved intuitively that non-trivial solutions of the differential equation f' = f have no zeros. We give a working definition of the concept of preformal proving, as well as three examples of preformal proofs. Then we furnish several such proofs of the aforesaid fact, and we analyse these proofs in detail. Finally, we draw some conclusions for mathematics in school and in teacher training.

Applications and modelling in mathematics teaching
(1991)
The aim of this paper is a comprehensive presentation of some important basic and general aspects of the topic applications and modelling, with emphasis on the secondary school level. Owing to the review character of this paper, some overlap with the survey paper Blum and Niss (1989) for ICME-6 in Budapest is inevitable. The paper will consist of three parts. In part 1, I shall try to clarify some basic concepts and remind the reader of a few application and modelling examples suitable for teaching. In part 2, I shall ...

Elementare Behandlung exponentieller Prozesse

Mathematical modelling in mathematics education and instruction
(1993)
This paper aims at giving a concise survey of the present state-of-the-art of mathematical modelling in mathematics education and instruction. It will consist of four parts. In part 1, some basic concepts relevant to the topic will be clarified and, in particular, mathematical modelling will be defined in a broad, comprehensive sense. Part 2 will review arguments for the inclusion of modelling in mathematics teaching at schools and universities, and identify certain schools of thought within mathematics education. ...

Finite Element Simulations for the Design of Therapeutic Approaches for Retinal Diseases
(2022)
The retinal disease age-related macular degeneration is the most common cause of vision loss in industrialized countries. In this thesis, motivated by the drug (antibody) treatment of this disease, we designed long-term three dimensional Finite Element simulations of the drug distribution in the healthy human eye. The underlying model consists of a time-dependent convection-diffusion equation coupled to a stationary Darcy equation describing the flow of the aqueous humor through the vitreous medium. We replaced the ...

Computing Ground States for Fermi-Bose Mixtures through Efficient Numerical Methods
(2023-05)
In this work, we will first review the Quantum Mechanics theory to derive the main equations. Next, we will analyze these equations by Functional Analysis methods to find conditions for existence, uniqueness, multiplicity, and other properties as positivity. Next, we will review and develop some numerical methods for solving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, its time version, generalizations with rotational terms, and systems of NLSE (NLSS). We notice that the main problem to run numerical methods is the memory ...

Elimination in Operator Algebras
(2014-08-08)
A large class of special functions are solutions of systems of linear difference and differential equations with polynomial coefficients. For a given function, these equations considered as operator polynomials generate a left ideal in a noncommutative algebra called Ore algebra. This ideal with finitely many conditions characterizes the function uniquely so that Gröbner basis techniques can be applied.
Many problems related to special functions which can be described by such ideals can be solved by performing ...

Convergence analysis of time-discretization schemes for rate-independent systems
(2017-12-21)
It is well known that rate-independent systems involving nonconvex energy functionals in general do not allow for time-continuous solutions even if the given data are smooth. In the last years, several solution concepts were proposed that include discontinuities in the notion of solution, among them the class of global energetic solutions and the class of BV-solutions. In general, these solution concepts are not equivalent and numerical schemes are needed that reliably approximate that type of solutions one is ...

Existence of parameterized BV-solutions for rate-independent systems with discontinuous loads
(2019-09-25)
We study a rate-independent system with non-convex energy and in the case of a time-discontinuous loading. We prove existence of the rate-dependent viscous regularization by time-incremental problems, while the existence of the so called parameterized BV-solutions is obtained via vanishing viscosity in a suitable parameterized setting. In addition, we prove that the solution set is compact.
