Degrees of Free Word-Order and Freely Rewriting Restarting Automata
(Universität Kassel, FB 17, Mathematik/Informatik, 2005)
In natural languages with a high degree of word-order freedom syntactic phenomena like dependencies (subordinations) or valencies do not depend on the word-order (or on the individual positions of the individual words). This means that some permutations of sentences of these languages are in some (important) sense syntactically equivalent. Here we study this phenomenon in a formal way. Various types of j-monotonicity for restarting automata can serve as parameters for the degree of word-order freedom and for the ...

On the Descriptional Complexity of Simple RL-Automata
(2006)
Analysis by reduction is a method used in linguistics for checking the correctness of sentences of natural languages.
This method is modelled by restarting automata. Here we study a new type of restarting automaton, the so-called t-sRL-automaton, which is an RL-automaton that is rather restricted in that it has a window of size 1 only, and that it works under a minimal acceptance condition.
On the other hand, it is allowed to perform up to t rewrite (that is, delete) steps per cycle.
We focus on the descriptional ...

A generalization of Student’s t-distribution from the viewpoint of special functions
(2005)
Student’s t-distribution has found various applications in mathematical statistics. One of the main properties of the t-distribution is to converge to the normal distribution as the number of samples tends to infinity. In this paper, by using a Cauchy integral we introduce a generalization of the t-distribution function with four free parameters and show that it converges to the normal distribution again. We provide a comprehensive treatment of mathematical properties of this new distribution. Moreover, since the ...

Computation of locally free class groups
(2006)
We show that the locally free class group of an order in a semisimple algebra over a number field is isomorphic to a certain ray class group. This description is then used to present an algorithm that computes the
locally free class group. The algorithm is implemented in MAGMA for the case where the algebra is a group ring over the rational numbers.

Numerical simulation of tunnel fires using preconditioned finite volume schemes
(2006)
This article is concerned with the numerical simulation of flows at low Mach numbers which are subject to the gravitational force and strong heat sources. As a specific example for such flows, a fire event in a car tunnel will be considered in detail. The low Mach flow is treated with a preconditioning technique allowing the computation of unsteady flows, while the source terms for gravitation and heat are incorporated via operator splitting. It is shown that a first order discretization in space is not able to compute ...

On the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for abelian extensions of a quadratic imaginary field
(Universität Kassel, FB 17, Mathematik/Informatik, 2005)
Let k be a quadratic imaginary field, p a prime which splits in k/Q and does not divide the class number hk of k. Let L denote a finite abelian extention of k and let K be a subextention of L/k. In this article we prove the p-part of the Equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture for the pair (h0(Spec(L)),Z[Gal(L/K)]).

Restarting automata with restricted utilization of auxiliary symbols
(Universität Kassel, FB 17, Mathematik/Informatik, 2005)
The restarting automaton is a restricted model of computation that was introduced by Jancar et al. to model the so-called analysis by reduction, which is a technique used in linguistics to analyze sentences of natural languages. The most general models of restarting automata make use of auxiliary symbols in their rewrite operations, although this ability does not directly correspond to any aspect of the analysis by reduction. Here we put restrictions on the way in which restarting automata use auxiliary symbols, and ...

Learning analysis by reduction from positive data
(Universität Kassel, FB 17, Mathematik/Informatik, 2005)
Analysis by reduction is a linguistically motivated method for checking correctness of a sentence. It can be modelled by restarting automata. In this paper we propose a method for learning restarting automata which are strictly locally testable (SLT-R-automata). The method is based on the concept of identification in the limit from positive examples only. Also we characterize the class of languages accepted by SLT-R-automata with respect to the Chomsky hierarchy.

A generic formula for the values at the boundary points of monic classical orthogonal polynomials
(2005)
In a previous paper we have determined a generic formula for the polynomial solution families of the well-known differential equation of hypergeometric type σ(x)y"n(x)+τ(x)y'n(x)-λnyn(x)=0. In this paper, we give another such formula which enables us to present a generic formula for the values of monic classical orthogonal polynomials at their boundary points of definition.

Preconditioner updates applied to CFD model problems
(2007)
In the present paper we concentrate on solving sequences of nonsymmetric linear systems with block structure arising from compressible flow problems. We attempt to improve the solution process by sharing part of the computational effort throughout the sequence. This is achieved by application of a cheap updating technique for preconditioners which we adapted in order to be used for our applications. Tested on three benchmark compressible flow problems, the strategy speeds up the entire computation with an acceleration ...
