Entwicklungslinien und Herausforderungen der Arbeitsbeziehungen in Deutschland und Hessen
(2024-05)

Bringing heterodoxy back into a world of pessimism
(2024-01-29)
In this Extractivism Occasional Papers’ volume, we brought together two first-wave scholars working on structuralism, class and development, Luiz Carlos Bresser-Pereira and Hartmut Elsenhans, and upcoming scholars – Ingrid Harvord Kvangraven, Fernando Rugitsky and Johanna Siebert – who build on structuralist thinking to present their own take on the importance of revitalising it. Our project follows the Hegelian dialectics and seeks aufheben, in the sense of learning from the past, preserving what is valuable, and ...

Searching for a substitute: Algeria and Venezuela as energy security alternatives for Europe?
(2024-01-26)

(2023-09)
• In 2019, Algeria experienced one of the largest popular uprisings the country has ever seen in its post-independence history: the Hirak.
• The crisis had been looming for several years, as shifts in the political elite increased. The end of the financial boom exacerbated this process.
• Between 2015 and 2018, oil and gas export revenues declined by an average of 14% per year.
• Socioeconomic factors ultimately contributed to the outbreak of the Algerian hirak.

Reporting Power
(2024)
An eclectic genealogy (Foucault, 1977) that reconstructs the previous understanding and emergence of a ‘taken for granted’ global practice: the practice of suspicious activity reporting. A governance practice whereby financial institutions worldwide document and report the conduct of consumers deemed suspicious. At the center of this practice is a material artefact, a multipage fillable form called the Suspicious Activity Report. Following Actor-Network Theory (Latour, 1987), the form also serves as the centerpiece ...

Ordoliberalism Out of Order? The Fragile Constitutionality of Greek Austerity (Part Two)
(2020-06)
This is the second part of a two-part post. The first part, available here, considered the historical background of the concept of constitutional order and its relation to the ordoliberal project. Judicial independence was examined in parallel with central bank independence, with each understood as a means of insulating policy from social and democratic pressures and also as a means of enacting and maintaining fiscal discipline and market-conforming order. It also included some preliminary observations on the relation ...

Ordoliberalism Out of Order? The Fragile Constitutionality of Greek Austerity (Part One)
(2020-05)
The architecture of the European Monetary Union (EMU) has often been understood to be built on a fundamentally ordoliberal framework. [1] The precise characteristics of what constitutes an ordoliberal framework are often not clarified, and they have been widely debated in contemporary scholarship. But a crucial characteristic of ordoliberalism, and one that has received comparatively little attention, concerns the importance of grounding economic policy in a “constitutional order”: ordoliberal political economy insists ...

Ordoliberalism and the Making of the Economic Constitution: State, Law, and Money in the Market Economy
(2023)
The aim of my research is to explore the political economy of ordoliberalism in its historical trajectory. Beginning from the years of its inception during the interwar period, the dissertation focuses on the specific conditions and political economy of the Weimar Republic as the framework within which the ordoliberal framework was developed. Moving on to the postwar period, the dissertation examines the attempts of operationalization of the ordoliberal framework within the context of West Germany and the social ...

Prekäre Beschäftigung in Hessen
(2024-06)

What impact has the El Kamour social movement had on the establishment of a new socio-economic development model in Tataouine (Tunisia)?
(2024-05-17)
