Theorising Postdevelopment
(2023-11)
The paper seeks to define and situate postdevelopment (PD) theory within the social sciences by discussing its relation to other theoretical approaches. It concludes that PD can be seen to a rather limited extent as a development theory, but rather as a sociology of knowledge of this discipline and a critiqu e of its foundation. PD shares the critique of capitalism with Marxism but also has a more negative view of industrial modernity, its relation to nature, economic growth and productivity. For some, PD is characterized ...

The Holy Land Geography as Emotional Experience
(De Gruyter, 2021-06-08)
In this paper,we evaluate various medieval cartographic and diagrammatic representations of the Holy Land. The analysis focuses particularly on the religious dimensions of these representations and their potential for making pilgrimage accessible, creating religious symbolism and exciting spiritual emotions. The leading hypothesis is that medieval mapmakers introduced special technical features into maps and similar cartographic representations to deepen religious emotions and to stimulate intense sensory responses ...

Research communication has been gaining public attention in recent years. Therefore, medievalists also need to focus on the transfer of their research topics to the public both within and outside the university. Based on current political demands calling for a change in communication culture, the article first of all deals theoretically with two different concepts of research communication, by distinguishing between forms of translation and those of popularization. Numerous public events, exhibitions, and cooperative ...

This essay concentrates on the creative potential of mapping for the subsequent processing of travels, experiences, and descriptions as well as on the associated cultural techniques, such as copying, imitating, quoting, de-contextualizing, re-contextualizing, and transplantation. It focuses on the transformation from travel to map and from the map back to the space traveled. Based on examples in which travel knowledge and cartographic skills are intertwined, the essay illuminates the wide spectrum of possibilities ...

Europe’s authoritarian shift
(2023)
The European Union prides itself for being a legal order and a supranational organisation created through, and organised around, a specific institutional framework and an ordoliberal-inspired “rules against discretion” approach. Theories of ‘integration through law’ abound and the European Monetary Union (EMU) remains a unique common currency area structured within a constitutional framework. Officially, the formal priority of treaties, mandates and the European legal framework are presented as the sine qua non of ...

Jenseits des Horizonts
(Schwabe Verlag, 2022)
