Towards crop communities: exploring wheat diversity, wheat-pea species mixtures and farming practice in a food system context
(2022-06)
This thesis combines experimental work on heterogeneous crop populations (HP) and species mixtures (SM) with a social scientific and participatory approach. Chapter 1 introduces crop communities as a concept to integrate multiple approaches to diversify farming systems. HPs provide intraspecific and SM interspecific diversity in crop communities. A key challenge for the genetic improvement of HPs, especially for root traits is to combine effective selection to improve HPs while maintaining intraspecific diversity. ...

Tree Vigour in Apple Production: Impact of Replant Disease and Mitigation Strategies
(2022)
Cultivating apples on sites previously used for cultivation of apples leads to suppression of vegetative performance of apple trees and losses in fruit yields. This replant effect is attributed to an apple related form of soil fertility loss named ‘soil fatigue’ and ‘Apple Replant Disease’ (ARD). Replant disease strongly affects profitability of apple production in nurseries specialised in fruit trees, as well as on fruit orchards. Recent studies focus on causally linked agents of the replant disease and quantification ...

Inter- and intraindividual variation in energy supply of dairy cows and the potentials of animal individual energy balancing
(2022-04)
In recent decades, a massive increase in milk yield per cow per year has been observed, which could initially be considered positive due to economic advantages, but at the physiological level a corresponding increase in energy intake has not occurred. This situation of negative energy balance increasingly confronts cows with metabolic challenges, which, however, usually remain unnoticed due to a lack of animal-specific considerations, and thus increasing rates of disease and malting can also be observed. The objective ...

Embracing the risks and the potentials for a sustainable dairy value chain in Georgia: Assessment of dairy value chain sustainability, constraints and opportunities in Kvemo Kartli region, Georgia
(2021-10-15)

Process optimisation and development of non-invasive monitoring approaches for the drying of apples
(2020)
Drying is of great importance particularly in the field of preserving agricultural products. It plays a very critical role by delivering nutrient rich products with a long shelf-life as well as help to combat food loss. Drying processing techniques have changed and improved significantly over time, helping to ensure food abundance in both aesthetical and nutritional regards. Convective hot air drying is one of the most common technique practiced by 85 % of industries. It can be easily applied in the remote areas of ...

Food commercialization, hidden hunger and malnutrition: A study of food and nutrition security, focusing on the marginalized society in Sri Lanka
(2020-09)
From 2016 to 2019, a collaborative research project between the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka and the Department of Organic Food Quality and Food Culture, University of Kassel, Germany, was carried out to investigate the food commercialization, hidden hunger, and malnutrition in marginalized societies in Sri Lanka.
Consuming a healthy diet, maintaining good health, and chronic diseases is a challenge for those struggling with poverty and food insecurity for various reasons in Sri Lanka, including limited financial ...

Assessment of genetic diversity in local breeds
(2020-06)
The present study aimed at assessing genetic diversity in selected local livestock breeds in Northern Germany, and furthermore, examining some of the indices used in describing diversity in populations. The study begun with an assessment of genetic diversity in the German Angler (RVA) and Red-and-white dual-purpose (RDN) cattle breeds. Analyses of the RVA and RDN pedigrees, consisting of 93,078 and 184,358 records, respectively, revealed a number of Red Holstein (RH) sires that were influential in these breeds. Even ...

Design of a decentralised camel milk processing plant with integration of renewable energy supply
(2020)

Sustainable diets: Studies on German consumers’ intention-behavior gap
(2020-01)
Globally our practiced food systems are causing great harm to our environment including contributions to biodiversity loss, soil degradation, water pollution, and climate change, as well as to human health. Sustainable diets are crucial for solving those global diet-related problems because they are credited with a key role in the transformation of our currently practiced food systems into more sustainable ones. Increasing the practice of sustainable diets can be a starting point for initiating the needed change. ...

Challenges to ecosystem services of sustainable agriculture in West Africa
(2020)
Food security is still sub-optimal in many parts of West Africa calling for more efficient agricultural practices in mitigating food insecurity. Some of the problems faced in West African agricultural systems are bottlenecks in ruminant livestock supply, inefficiency in commercial poultry production, and loss of arthropod diversity. These issues require proper integration of farming systems, demand the closing of nutrient cycles, need diversi cation of production, and require enhancement of ecosystem services. To ...
