Agroecological heuristics: Xi (Ξ) biomathematical models of alpha diversity and Lambda functional entropy index (λ) applied for macrofauna in diversified agroecosystems of Nicaragua
(2021-12-08)
Agriculture causes chaos on the macrofauna associated with agroecosystems. The functions developed by macrofauna species in agroecological environments are harmful, beneficial and fundamental for food production. In order to design Xi (Ξ) biomathematical models of alpha diversity and to create a functional entropy index (λ), the taxonomic identification of macrofauna was carried out in 10 agroecosystems with conventional and agroecological production approach in five locations of Nicaragua: Boaco, Carazo, Chinandega, ...

Application of non-linear models in description of growth of dual purpose FUNAAB Alpha chickens
(2021-08-03)
Growth is explained mathematically by models that have parameters with biological interpretations. This study was conducted to compare five non-linear growth models (Gompertz, Brody, Logistics, Von Bertalanffy and Negative exponential) in order to describe growth in the three genotypes (normal feather, naked neck and frizzle feather) of the dual purpose FUNAAB Alpha chickens (n=332). Doesn’t Use Derivative iterative method of nonlinear procedure in SAS was used to estimate the model parameters. Computational difficultly, ...

A review of the literature on gender and chemical fertiliser use in maize production in sub-Saharan Africa
(2021-05-25)
Are there differences in men’s and women’s access to and use of fertiliser in sub-Saharan Africa? This article explores the issue through a systematic review of the extant literature on gender and fertiliser use in maize production. The findings show that indeed a gender gap in the use of fertiliser exists. More than a decade after the World Bank identified a gender gap in fertiliser use, there are no systematic national or global data sets comparing fertiliser use by gender. While farm input subsidies can improve ...

Nutrient digestibility, nitrogen balance and rumen fermentation parameters of West African dwarf goats offered treated maize stover supplemented with Gmelina arborea
(2021-05-20)
A large portion of agricultural crop residues are potential feed resources for ruminants in the tropics. This study therefore, investigated the intake, nutrient digestibility, nitrogen utilisation and rumen fermentation parameters of West African dwarf goats (WAD) fed treated and untreated maize stover supplemented with Gmelina arborea. Twenty male WAD goats (11.50 ± 0.45 kg body weight) were randomly allotted into four treatments with five animals each. Untreated maize stover (MS), urea treated maize stover (UT), ...

Incorporation of dried goat rumen contents in layer diets improves egg yolk colour and acceptability of eggs
(2021-06-07)
The use of dried goat rumen content (DGRC) as a partial replacement for fish meal in layer diets was investigated. A total of 90 H&N Brown Nick layer chickens were offered diets in which DGRC were incorporated at 0, 5 and 10% levels. Iso-caloric and nitrogenous diets were formulated to meet the recommended nutritional requirements for laying hens. Experimental birds were assigned to 9 cages (10 birds/cage) and experimental diets offered in a completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. Data was collected ...

Potassium iodide influence on iodine-leaf concentration and growth of amaranth (Amaranthus cruentus L.)
(2021-05-25)
Low iodine content in soils is a common feature in lowland and in mountainous regions far from oceans. The diets of the people living in these regions are often deficient in dietary iodine, resulting in chronic iodine deficiency syndrome, goiter, hearing loss and other debilitating diseases. A field experiment was conducted at the Teaching and Research Farm, University of Ilorin, Nigeria during the 2017 and 2018 cropping seasons, to evaluate the response of amaranths to iodine enrichment using an agronomic approach. ...

Early planting and relay cropping: pathways to cope with heat and drought?
(2021-05-05)
Maize (Zea mays) is an important food and cash crop of uplands in Southeast Asia, where it is often prone to drought and heat stress associated with climate change. This study aimed at assessing the effect of heat and drought on maize performance, testing coping strategies under such weather extremes, and understanding associated mechanisms. The experiment was carried out during 2018 in Thailand, using a split-plot design with three replications. Treatments were: July-planted maize sole cropping (control), July-planted ...

Green food consumption: Studies on consumers’ purchase intentions and the intention-behaviour gap in the Chinese context
(2021)
With the growing problem of the global environment and exposure to various food safety incidents, consumers are increasingly concerned about the environment as well as the safety and quality of food products. Therefore, growing calls for safe, healthy, environmentally friendly, and sustainable food consumption have been growing. As one of China’s most successful ecolabelling programs, green food has shown great potential for further expansion among Chinese food consumption. This doctoral research has taken consumers’ ...

Nutritional, antioxidant properties and polyphenol content of quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) cultivated in Iran
(2021-05-25)
The quinoa is pseudocereal plant that has nutritional value. Recently, It was cultivated in iran because of water crisis. This study aimed to assess the physicochemical and antioxidant properties of quinoa cultivated in Iran for the first time. The macronutrients and energetic value, polyphenol, total phenol content and DPHH of quinoa were measured. Some B group vitamin, the free fatty acid profile was assessed by HPLC and GC-mass separately. The trace elements were also evaluated by ICP. The amounts of dry matter, ...
