Forage biomass availability, species diversity and seasonal variation in grazing behaviour of cattle in the outskirts of Ouagadougou
(2020-10-14)
In order to determine the exploitation of grazing areas in the outskirts of Ouagadougou by cattle herds, the grazing behaviour of cows was monitored in five villages in these during three distinct seasons, namely wet, cool dry and hot dry season. A vegetation study including a census of the woody and herbaceous stratum of grazing areas allowed for an assessment of the pasture biomass availability during the wet season. Results of the monitoring of cattle herds showed that the land type grazed by cattle in the outskirts ...

A systems approach to understanding post-harvest losses: Insights from a case study of the pineapple value chain in Uganda
(2019-03)

Determination of fat, salt and sodium contents of selected fast food items available for sale in Colombo city, Sri Lanka: An approach to colour coding of fast foods
(2021-11-29)
Fast food has become a popular trend among Sri Lankan consumers. However, the nutritional facts of these food items that aid consumer awareness are scantly found in Sri Lanka. This study aimed to examine fat, salt and sodium contents of selected fast food types sold in Colombo city. A questionnaire-based survey was conducted to identify the fast food consumption patterns of the target population. Fat, salt and sodium contents of highly preferred fast food types selected based on the survey, namely; Chinese fish roll ...

Using crop genetic diversity to improve resilience: Agronomic potential of evolutionary breeding under differing management systems
(2019-03)
Mainly within organic and low-input cropping systems, evolutionary breeding based on the creation of heterogeneous evolving composite cross populations (CCPs) has been gaining attention. The aim of this dissertation is to assess the agronomic potential and yield stability of wheat CCPs in comparison to pure line varieties under differing management systems.
Three winter wheat CCPs were created in the UK in 2001, based on parental varieties that were selected for either their high yield or baking quality. The baking ...

Using Moringa Oleifera Seed Cake and Compost as Organic Soil Amendments for Sustainable Agriculture in Valencia Orange Orchard
(2021-09-24)
This work was conducted during two consecutive seasons of 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 at the Experimental Research Station of National Research Centre at Nubaria, El Behiera governorate, Egypt. Twelve year old Valencia orange trees (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck) budded on Volkamer lemon rootstock, grown in sandy soil under drip irrigation system as plant materials to study the effect of six organic soil amendment treatments on soil hydrophysical properties, soil water retention, soil water movement, plant nutrient contents, ...

Farmers' perceptions on climate change and adaptation strategies in Yendi Municipality, Ghana
(2021-11-29)
It is common to hear and read about climate change in literature, media and interpersonal discussions among farmers and environmental groups. Farmers understanding of climate change differ in the midst of these discussions because of individual experiences and perceptions after many years of farming. The rainfall is declining and the temperature is rising are the common perceptions farmers hold on climate change which they see as adversely affecting agriculture. In moments of such adversity, farmers think about what ...

Choice of savings instruments among rural women maize farmers: evidence from Uganda
(2021-05-25)
Households in developing countries employ a wide range of mechanisms for making cash and in-kind (goods and services) savings which are either formal or informal. Yet, literature on how choices about appropriate savings instruments are made remains scanty. We examine the patterns and choice of these saving instruments using household data from women farmers in eastern Uganda. In particular, the paper focuses on the choice between formal cash saving instruments like commercial banks, village savings and loans associations ...

Robustness of portable and laboratory-based visible/near- and mid-infrared spectroscopy for optimized determination of temporally and spatially variable soil properties
(2021)
Application of visible/near- (VISNIRS) and mid-infrared (MIRS) spectroscopy to the field of soil science is promising, as it allows information about a range of properties to be collected simultaneously and rapidly, thereby providing high spatial and temporal resolution data for use in, e.g., soil mapping, precision agriculture, and long-term monitoring. However, investigation of the conditions under which visNIRS and MIRS can replace traditional lab methods is required, as the accuracy, robustness, and efficiency ...

Nutrient digestibility, nitrogen balance and rumen fermentation parameters of West African dwarf goats offered treated maize stover supplemented with Gmelina arborea
(2021-05-20)
A large portion of agricultural crop residues are potential feed resources for ruminants in the tropics. This study therefore, investigated the intake, nutrient digestibility, nitrogen utilisation and rumen fermentation parameters of West African dwarf goats (WAD) fed treated and untreated maize stover supplemented with Gmelina arborea. Twenty male WAD goats (11.50 ± 0.45 kg body weight) were randomly allotted into four treatments with five animals each. Untreated maize stover (MS), urea treated maize stover (UT), ...

Growth performance and immunological response of African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) juveniles reared in biofloc system
(2021-06-08)
This study was conducted to examine the growth and immune performance of catfish (Clarias gariepinus) juveniles cultured in a biofloc fish farming system. To achieve this, 900 C. gariepinus juveniles (9.0 ± 0.23 g) were cultured in an intensive zero water exchange biofloc system for 72 days in 9 separate tanks (2 m3 each) aerated by an air blower, after which growth assessment of fish was conducted. The trial consisted of three treatments in triplicates, a control without carbon source addition, and two biofloc ...
