The ‘fine balance’ of West African savannah parklands: biomass generation versus firewood consumption
(2022-03-15)
In sub-Saharan Africa, the long-awaited fuelwood gap, resulting of the unbalance between a declining supply of firewood and the increasing demand of households, remains a latent social-ecological challenge. As its quantitative basis remains elusive, we have assessed agroforestry parklands, assumedly main providers of firewood, and firewood consumption in Dassari, Benin and Dano, Burkina Faso, both in the West African savannah. Data collected included botanical inventories, tree biomass estimations, householders’ ...

Effects of Petiveria alliacea (guinea hen weed) leaf extract on fermentation parameters, nutrient digestibility and faecal worm egg count in growing West African dwarf goats
(2022-03-21)
Medicinal plants are used in animal feeding as natural antimicrobial to improve nutrient utilisation and health status of animals. This study assessed the effects of varying concentration of Petiveria alliacea leaf extract (PLE) on fermentation parameters, nutrient digestibility, nitrogen utilisation and faecal worm egg count of growing West African dwarf goats. Twenty- four (24) growing West African dwarf bucks with average body weight of 8.50 ± 0.55 kg were divided into four treatment groups with six bucks each ...

Influencing factors of performance of agricultural cooperatives in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta
(2022-03-22)
The study identifies the influencing factors of the performance of agricultural cooperatives (ACs) in the Mekong Delta (MD) of Vietnam. The study used a disproportionate stratified sampling method, with 308 valid samples collected from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in the districts and the Management Boards of ACs in 9 provinces in MD. Performance of AC is measured against five indicators, namely return on sales (ROS), return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), responsiveness to cooperative ...

Influencing factors of adopting solar irrigation technology and its impact on farmers’ livelihood. A case study in Bangladesh
(2021-12-15)
Sustainable irrigation access is considered critical for agricultural growth in Bangladesh, which vindicates the food and livelihood security. Solar powered irrigation system had emerged as promising technology to make sustainable irrigation in Bangladesh. This study examines the factors affecting the adoption of solar powered irrigation system and the impact of this technology on livelihood of farmer. To conduct this analysis, data were collected from Meherpur district of Bangladesh. Simple random sampling technique ...

Food rescue and donation in socioenvironmental policies on tackling food loss and waste: a systematic review
(2021-12-20)
In recent years, there has been an increasing concern among governments about food loss and waste – FL&W and, in this context, the food rescue and donation – FR&D has emerged in the scenario of socioenvironmental policies as a strategic factor for FL&W reduction. Despite FR&D have potential to establish a “win-win” arrangement between the spheres of waste management and demands of food security, it still has been perceived as a less attractive alternative than forwarding the surplus food to the waste treatment system. ...

Decontamination of Pineapple (Ananas comosus) juice using Ozone as a Non-thermal Sterilization method
(2021-12-15)
Ozone is a non thermal preservation technology used for enhancing shelf life and the safety of the food products. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of gaseous ozone on microbial decontamination and on some physicochemical characteristics (soluble solids content, pH, titratable acidity and color), bioactive compounds and total antioxidant activity of Pineapple juice. Ozone treatments were applied for Pineapple juice at 4 different exposure times as 15 mins, 30 mins, 45 mins and 60 mins at 250C and ...

Innovative formulation of oleogels using bioactive compounds and sal starch and characterization of their products
(2022-02-15)
There is a focus on oleogels nowadays with low saturated fatty acids and zero trans fatty acids to substitute solid fats in various food formulations. The other advantage of using oleogels that it can retain the health benefits of the individual oils especially the micronutrients as the processing does not involve high temperature. The present study used a blend of rice bran oil and sesame oil, both the oils are rich in micronutrients, together with starch obtained from sal meal and lecithin as gelling agent to ...

Antioxidant activity of a mixture of water-soluble tempeh extract with whey powder that has undergone a Maillard reaction
(2021-12-20)
High amino acid content in tempeh and lactose in whey powder can be combined to perform Maillard reaction. So, it can be used to produce functional food products. This is caused by the formation of Amadori and melanoidin as water-soluble compounds which are reported to have high antioxidant capacity and produce a preferred flavor. The general objective of the study was to obtain an optimum process condition in a mixture of water soluble tempeh extract and whey powder with the highest antioxidant capacity (100 mL). ...

Preliminary assesment on drought tolerant oil palm in semi-arid area
(2021-12-15)
The evaluation of oil palm growth performance and their corresponding effect on drought very crucial in selection of proper parent’s tree. The parent palm that showed drought tolerance and have less effect on oil yield is important for optimisation semi-arid lands usage in future. The Split plot with two replications in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) were conducted and mixed stand with an adjacent control plot. All 19 progenies was evaluated and interaction effects are estimated using split plots analysis. ...

The effects of grain storage technologies on maize marketing behaviour of smallholder farmers in Zimbabwe
(2020-01-13)
This study investigated the effects of grain storage practices on smallholder farmers’ maize marketing behaviour using primary data collected from 413 random households in Makoni and Shamva Districts of Zimbabwe. The data was analysed using the ordered probit model and the study results revealed that storage practices had significant effects on the maize marketing behaviour of smallholder farmers. Storage using insecticide and traditional granary increased the chances of farmers to become net sellers of maize. Using ...
