Horsegram [Macrotyloma uniflorum]: an underutilized pulse crop as a sustainable plant-based protein
(2022-07-31)
The demand of consumers for plant-based protein is high and is anticipated to increase in the future due to various underlying health benefits. Moreover, the production of high-quality animal protein globally results in a challenging situation for the sustainability of the environment. Contemporary, to find new alternative protein sources, underutilized legumes are given more attention to meet the ever-increasing requirement for vegetable protein. One of the indigenous underutilized legumes is Horsegram (Macrotyloma ...

Sustainability Assessment for Asparagus Farms that Work with a Community-Supported Agriculture Model in Turkey
(2022-07-31)
Due to the diversified nature of agricultural systems, it is difficult to handle the sustainability aspects of different farming practices. With an intention to evaluate the sustainability of the community-supported agriculture (CSA) model in Turkey, the current study focuses on asparagus farms and designs farm-specific sustainability indicators that would be helpful for the farmers. The framework developed for this purpose consists of 20 environmental, 8 economic, and 17 social sustainability indicators derived and ...

Icing the Cake: A Lifestyle-based Benefit and Preference Analysis on Online Grocery Shopping
(2022-07-31)
Germany has not kept pace with the global development of online grocery shopping (OGS) and despite a pandemic-related increase remains on a moderate level. This phenomenon may reflect infrastructural benefits of stationary retailing, personal and household preferences, and perceptions of OGS services. To this end, this study investigates the determinants of OGS benefit perception addressing the interconnection between personal and household benefits and situational conditions based on qualitative ...

Rural farmers’ learning of weed management methods in Malaysia
(2022-08-31)
Malim Nawar in Kampar District, Malaysia, is a potential major production site for modern high-technology farms by 2030. To achieve this, a significant increase in intensive agricultural activities and weed management practices is required. To develop strategies and achieve the goals of sustainable agriculture, the present study used a semi-structured questionnaire survey to assess farmers’ perception of weeds, their sources of information, and their reasons for willingness or unwillingness to adopt non-chemical ...

Towards crop communities: exploring wheat diversity, wheat-pea species mixtures and farming practice in a food system context
(2022-06)
This thesis combines experimental work on heterogeneous crop populations (HP) and species mixtures (SM) with a social scientific and participatory approach. Chapter 1 introduces crop communities as a concept to integrate multiple approaches to diversify farming systems. HPs provide intraspecific and SM interspecific diversity in crop communities. A key challenge for the genetic improvement of HPs, especially for root traits is to combine effective selection to improve HPs while maintaining intraspecific diversity. ...

Tree Vigour in Apple Production: Impact of Replant Disease and Mitigation Strategies
(2022)
Cultivating apples on sites previously used for cultivation of apples leads to suppression of vegetative performance of apple trees and losses in fruit yields. This replant effect is attributed to an apple related form of soil fertility loss named ‘soil fatigue’ and ‘Apple Replant Disease’ (ARD). Replant disease strongly affects profitability of apple production in nurseries specialised in fruit trees, as well as on fruit orchards. Recent studies focus on causally linked agents of the replant disease and quantification ...

Malaria and pneumonia effects on rice, vanilla production and rural household income in Madagascar: case of the Sava region
(2022-12-05)
In Madagascar, malaria remains the leading cause of consultation and deaths at hospital at all ages and pneumonia is one of the main causes of the under-five mortality and account for 45% of children hospitalizations. The number of these cases and deaths has not decreased during the last ten years. This paper aims to determine the effects of malaria and pneumonia cases on rice and vanilla production and income. We used data from a cross-sectional survey conducted in 2016 by the authors on 975 rural households and ...

Inter- and intraindividual variation in energy supply of dairy cows and the potentials of animal individual energy balancing
(2022-04)
In recent decades, a massive increase in milk yield per cow per year has been observed, which could initially be considered positive due to economic advantages, but at the physiological level a corresponding increase in energy intake has not occurred. This situation of negative energy balance increasingly confronts cows with metabolic challenges, which, however, usually remain unnoticed due to a lack of animal-specific considerations, and thus increasing rates of disease and malting can also be observed. The objective ...

Economics of food safety practices among cassava processors in northcentral Nigeria
(2022-08-31)
Food safety is a critical issue and a growing public health concern. Cassava being one of the staple foods widely consumed by the majority of households in Africa involves several processes. Assessment of the safety practices adopted by the processors is important to assist marketers and consumers towards the product to avoid food poisoning. Thus, this research assessed the economics of food safety practices adopted by cassava processors. Data collected from randomly selected 120 cassava processors were analysed using ...
