The potential of cabbage waste extract as a bio-stimulant for enhancing growth, biochemical constituents, and oil quality of thyme (Thymus vulgaris)
(2022-12-29)
Thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) is an important cultural aromatic plant, whose herb and essential oils (EOs) have been used in many industrial and medicinal applications. Herb and EO yields are often negatively influenced by various factors, so it is important to keep finding new growing procedures that increase the quantitative content of herbs and EOs. Therefore, this paper is focused on the effects of applying cabbage extract (CE) at different concentrations on morphological parameters, mineral contents, total ...

Physiological response of some canola genotypes to proline concentration under saltwater irrigation conditions
(2022-12-29)
A pot experiment was conducted in split-split plot design with four replications to study proline foliar application with 0, 50, and 100 ppm and four canola genotypes cultivated under irrigation of tap water and salinity irrigation water at 4500 ppm and their interactive effects on growth characters, yield, and yield components and some chemical composition of the canola plants. Results indicated that a higher salinity level at 4500 ppm reduced growth, photosynthetic pigments, yield, and yield attributes as well as ...

The effects of weather factors on titrating acids accumulation in sweet cherry fruits
(2022-12-29)
During the fruit formation, the weather conditions have a decisive influence on the organic acids accumulation. In the context of global climate change, this issue has become new. The study of the titrated acids content in sweet cherry fruits was carried out for 12 years. Cherry fruits of three ripening groups were selected for the study. The average and strong correlation dependence between 11 weather factors and the titrated acids content for the sweet cherries varieties of early, middle, late ripening periods were ...

Characterisation of the lactation curve of Gyr and Sardo Negro cattle
(2023-07)
The objectives were to characterize the lactation curves (LC) of tropical Gyr and Sardo Negro (SN) cattle from Mexico for the design of breeding and management programs for these breeds. A total of 3561 records of 504 lactations and 3927 records of 449 lactations were used for Gyr and SN, respectively. Three lactation lengths (LL) were evaluated, namely 240 (240d), 270 (270d), and 300 (300d) days, with five non-linear models (NLM): Wood, Wiltmink, Cobby, Brody, and Sikka. Milk production was obtained at the beginning ...

Geospatial crop yield modeling for climate change risk transfer, impact assessment, and adaptation strategies
(2023)
Changing climate and weather patterns increase the pressure on food production systems worldwide, significantly impacting livelihoods and economies at various scales. Understanding and adapting/mitigating climate change are essential to cope with the adverse effects of climate change. Biophysical crop modeling offers a unique way to assess the pros and cons of different adaptation strategies because they integrate physical and biological principles to simulate the use and allocation of captured resources mechanistically. ...

Sustainability of traditional cocoa agroforests in Ghana
(2022)
Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) is an important agricultural commodity that is important to the economies of many countries in the world. Due to cocoa’s dependence on fertile forests soils, its production is a major cause of deforestation and soil degradation in producing countries. When grown in agroforestry systems it can conserve biodiversity, sequester carbon (C), and maintain soil fertility. There are many cocoa agroforests which are managed without synthetic agrochemicals. Because organic cocoa certification is now ...

Intervention options for small-scale family poultry development in south-eastern Madagascar: an expert survey
(2023-03-14)
The diets of resource-poor farmers in the Atsimo Atsinanana (AA) region of south-eastern Madagascar have limited diversity and are low in animal protein. Although poultry farming is widespread, productivity is low, and consumption of eggs is uncommon. To enable effective development interventions targeting poultry value chains, this study pursues two goals: (i) to describe current challenges in small-scale poultry rearing and egg consumption in AA, and (ii) to explore viable options for promoting poultry production. ...

Identification of socio-economic characteristics and farmers’ practices affecting rice (Oryza spp.) yields in Benin (West Africa)
(2022-12-28)
Rice (Oryza spp.) is one of the major staple foods in Benin. Benin has increased rice production through the expansion of cultivation area rather than increasing rice yields. To better understand the factors affecting rice yields, a thorough understanding of the current rice production system characteristics and constraints is required. The present study identifies socio-economic characteristics and farmers’ practices affecting rice yields and suggests improved cultivation practices in the sector. Data were collected ...

Nutrition transition in Kyrgyzstan: Understanding the triple burden of malnutrition and the importance of dietary quality
(2023)
Nutrition transition, including changes in lifestyle and diet, has been taking place globally. Malnutrition is a serious public health issue responsible for the considerable portion of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Currently, little knowledge about nutrition transition and its relation to malnutrition exists in low and middle-income countries. Kyrgyzstan undergoes a nutrition transition with health and diet implications, especially to women. Kyrgyzstan is believed to be at the end of the ‘receding famine’ stage ...

Planungshilfen zur Geschwisterkalbhaltung – Management und Kostenkalkulationen
(2022)
