Using Optical Satellite Imagery to Monitor and Understand Agricultural Land-cover Change
(2020-06)
The activities of humans have transformed the earth over the last decades. The transformation is estimated to increase further in response to the growing world population. This has caused many countries to devise means to utilize resources sustainably. Bio-economy is seen as a means to reduce the high reliance on fossil materials and ensure the provision of raw materials, energy and food to the increasing world population in a sustainable manner. However, the rising demands for biomass to produce bioenergy have relied ...

Evaluating the role of climate smart agriculture towards sustainable livelihoods in Mutare district, Zimbabwe
(2022-02-15)
Increasing climate variability continues to threaten livelihoods in southern Africa where communities face the challenges of addressing context specific complexities associated with rain-fed agriculture. Zimbabwe is equally vulnerable but the country is going through a transformation in agriculture through the implementation of climate smart agriculture practices that endeavour to enhance adaptation, resilience and increase productivity. The study was undertaken in Mutare district, Zimbabwe with the aim of exploring ...

Upgrading Starchy Staples for Tackling Malnutrition in South-West Ethiopia
(2018)
Child undernutrition is a critical public health challenge in Ethiopia. One of the immediate causes of child undernutrition is inadequate dietary intake as a result of relying on one or few starchy staples. Utmost attention should be given to improving diets of infants and young children if significant and fast changes are to be seen in the reduction of undernutrition. This dissertation examines the potentials of utilising appropriate food processing technologies for developing upgraded food products for infants and ...

Genotypic differences in body weight and physiological response of local and exotic turkeys challenged with Salmonella typhimurium
(2021-11-02)
To better understand susceptibility and/ or tolerance of locally adapted turkey to salmonellosis, we compared bodyweight, antibody titres and physiological traits based on genotype and sex of salmonella-infected turkeys. Three hundred poults from two genotypes (160 local and 140 exotic turkeys) were raised for twenty weeks. Bodyweight (BW), rectal temperature (RT), pulse rate (PR) and respiratory rate (RR) were measured weekly. Blood samples were collected from each turkey before and after inoculations at week 8 and ...

The effect of transglutaminase on physicochemical, microstructural, and organoleptic properties of low fat karish cheese
(2022-04-15)
Karish cheese is considered to be one of the most traditional Egyptian cheeses. It is manufactured from low-fat milk. It can be a key part of a healthy diet, especially for the elderly and those suffering from obesity-related illnesses. Low-fat cheese such as karish cheese has the problem of crumbly texture characteristics, which is the main problem for cheesemakers. This research aimed to improve the texture of karish cheese using transglutaminase (TGase), and to study the effects on cheese physical, microstructural, ...

Boxwood Borer Heterobostrychus brunneus (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) Infesting Dried Cassava: A Current Record from Southern Ethiopia
(2017-01-27)
Insect specimens of adult beetles and larvae of 7–9 and 9–10 mm length, respectively were collected from infested dry cassava at two locations from multiple stores in southern Ethiopia. The specimens were identified as Heterobostrychus brunneus (Murray, 1867) commonly known as boxwood borer and auger beetle. The study presents a current record of H. brunneus in Ethiopia, particularly in the context of infesting food products. Additionally, a wide geographical distribution of the pest was reviewed and presented in ...

Agricultural risk assessment to enhance the food systems of the Mbororo minority community in the Northwest region of Cameroon
(2021-10-29)
Increasing population pressure, coupled with the effects of climate change manifested by longer dry seasons, wildfires, and conflicts, threatens the food systems of minority communities. In the case of the Mbororo minority community of Northwest Region of Cameroon, these threats are exacerbated by already existing problems of marginalisation. This study assesses agricultural risks in the global context of food distribution and gross domestic product that also poses a specific threat to the food system of the Mbororo ...
