Effects of the application of biochar and organic fertilizers as well as temperature on soil carbon and aggregate dynamics
(2017-11-27)
Soil aggregate formation is an important process for long-term carbon storage in soils. While it has been shown that plant residues exert a positive influence on aggregate formation, the effects of organic fertilizers such as cattle slurry or manure as well as the effects of biochar application to soil are less clear. Furthermore, little is known about the role of increased soil temperatures in aggregate dynamics.
The main objectives of this thesis were to analyse the effects of (i) cattle slurry and manure, (ii) ...

Role of grassland in phosphorus-flows in mixed organic farms
(2017-09-28)
The aim of the study is to analyze the role of grassland in phosphorus (P) flows in mixed organic farms. The research farm of the Thünen Institute of Organic Farming, Trenthorst, located in northern Germany was used for the analyses. The farm converted to organic farming in 2001 and had no P-fertilizer import. Grassland-related P flows (by grazing and harvesting) were estimated with a specific method using a calibrated rising plate meter (DM = 100.41 x h + 1 (r²=0.7549; n=396)). Inner farm nutrient cycles were ...

Effects of plant diversity on bioenergy parameters in grassland biomass
(2013-01-28)
Extensive grassland biomass for bioenergy production has long been subject of scientific research. The possibility of combining nature conservation goals with a profitable management while reducing competition with food production has created a strong interest in this topic. However, the botanical composition will play a key role for solid fuel quality of grassland biomass and will have effects on the combustion process by potentially causing corrosion, emission and slagging. On the other hand, botanical composition ...

Nitrogen and carbon dynamics in grassland soils and plants after application of digestate
(2015-05-20)
A better understanding of effects after digestate application on plant community, soil microbial community as well as nutrient and carbon dynamics is crucial for a sustainable grassland management and the prevention of species and functional diversity loss. The specific research objectives of the thesis were:
(i) to investigate effects after digestate application on grass species and soil microbial community, especially focussing on nitrogen dynamic in the plant-soil system and to examine the suitability of the ...

Diversity, local uses and availability of medicinal plants and wild yams in the Mahafaly region of south-western Madagascar
(2015-08-31)
Short summary:
This study was undertaken to assess the diversity of plant resources utilized by the local population in south-western Madagascar, the social, ecological and biophysical conditions that drive their uses and availability, and possible alternative strategies for their sustainable use in the region. The study region, ‘Mahafaly region’, located in south-western Madagascar, is one of the country’s most economically, educationally and climatically disadvantaged regions. With an arid steppe climate, the ...

Microbial response to restoration of tantalite mine soils in western Rwanda
(2016-05-04)
Artisanal columbite-tantalite (coltan) mining has had negative effects on the rural economy in the great Lakes region of Africa through labor deficits, degradation and loss of farmland, food insecurity, high cost of living, and reduced traditional export crop production alongside secondary impacts that remotely affect the quality of air, water, soil, plants, animals, and human wellbeing. The situation is multifaceted and calls for a holistic approach for short and long-term mitigation of such negative effects. This ...

Effects of transformation processes in 'jubraka' agroforestry systems of the Nuba Mountains, Sudan, on nutrient fluxes
(2014-03-19)
Intensification processes in homegardens of the Nuba Mountains, Sudan, raise concerns about strongly positive carbon (C) and nutrient balances which are expected to lead to substantial element losses from these agroecosystems, in particular via soil gaseous emissions. Therefore, this thesis aimed at the quantification of C, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) input and output fluxes with a special focus on soil gaseous losses, and the calculation of respective element balances. A further focus in this ...
