Effects of grassland management intensification on dynamics of soil organic carbon and nitrogen in temperate grassland soils
(2018-05-09)
In Germany, about one third of the agricultural area is managed as permanent grassland. The predominant use of permanent grassland in Germany is mostly the production of fodder for meat or milk production, achieved by grazing or mowing. In addition, an increased demand for biomass to produce renewable energy has influenced grassland management in the last decade. Until 2013, a continuous decrease in grassland due to grassland conversion was recorded (from 2003 to 2013, by a total of about 5 %). The reduction in ...

Investigation of potential drying strategies for quality maintenance of carrot
(2021-05-27)
Convective drying of carrots is a non-linear and unsteady-state process with simultaneous mechanism of heat and mass transfer leading to time varying quality changes along the process and finally causing irreversible quality modification. Inappropriate drying condition will generate many qualities related problems such as destruction of physical properties and discoloration of carrots causing by mechanical and thermal damage due to over-drying or extended drying periods. Inconsistent quality of the product was also ...

Development of decentralized solar-assisted yogurt processing unit for the production of on-farm high-quality yogurt
(2024)
In Pakistan, the dairy sector represents a significant part of agricultural production and is an important source of income, especially for small farmers. Yogurt production at the farm level is important for adding value to the milk. In this study, a solar-assisted yogurt processing unit capable of performing three processes of heating, fermentation, and cooling in a single unit was developed. It consisted of a circular chamber surrounded by a coil for heating by a solar vacuum tube collector and a pillow plate for ...

Harnessing climate data to assess, anticipate and attribute climate impacts on agriculture
(2024)
Human-induced climate change already impacts agriculture and food security, with varying impacts on regions, communities and individuals. There is an urgent need to increase agricultural resilience to ensure food security for a growing world population under humaninduced climate change. Climate data is a necessary resource not only to better understand climate impacts but also to manage and minimise current and future negative climate impacts on agriculture. However, there are large uncertainties in observations of ...
