Remote sensing of yield and invasive species in nature conservation grasslands invaded by Lupinus polyphyllus
(2021-07)

Towards crop communities: exploring wheat diversity, wheat-pea species mixtures and farming practice in a food system context
(2022-06)
This thesis combines experimental work on heterogeneous crop populations (HP) and species mixtures (SM) with a social scientific and participatory approach. Chapter 1 introduces crop communities as a concept to integrate multiple approaches to diversify farming systems. HPs provide intraspecific and SM interspecific diversity in crop communities. A key challenge for the genetic improvement of HPs, especially for root traits is to combine effective selection to improve HPs while maintaining intraspecific diversity. ...

Aqueous Leaching Prior to Dewatering Improves the Quality of Solid Fuels from Grasslands
(2018-04-04)
Renewable energies are necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in energy production, and biomass plays a dominant role in the renewable energy sector. Combustion of biomass constitutes an efficient conversion technique, but is hindered by harmful elements which are frequently contained in residual grassland biomass. We investigated the effect of leaching on solid fuel quality with three independent experiments including the following treatments: (1) with or without leaching, (2) with leaching at various water ...

Heavy Metals and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Urban Leaf Litter Designated for Combustion
(2017-03-03)
Vast amounts of leaf litter have to be disposed of by city administrations. This biomass has the potential for energy conversion, but contamination with pollutants can adversely affect this usage. We investigated leaf litter samples from the city of Kassel by analyzing their heavy metal and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations. Leaf samples were indeed contaminated with heavy metals and PAHs and contamination was influenced by provenience and collection technique. A simple cleaning system of washing ...

Egyptian wheat
(2009-12-14)
Wheat as the major cereal crop in Egypt is the core of the government's food security policy. But there are rapid losses of the genetic resources of the country as a result of ongoing modernization and development. Thus we compiled the largest possible number of Egyptian accessions preserved in the world gene banks. In the present study we collected nearly 1000 Egyptian wheat accessions. A part from the Triticum species of the Egyptian flora four species have been found, which were
recorded for the first time T. ...

Agrobiodiversity and nutrition in traditional cropping systems
(2018-09-03)
In Uganda many farmer households have diverse agroforestry systems known as homegardens, which have been adapted over generations to supply a year-round harvest of nutritious foods. The work presented in this dissertation sought to identify the factors that influence the agrobiodiversity of these homegardens and to assess the effects of that agrobiodiversity on the health of the households that keep them. Households (n=102) were identified via stratified, random selection across three distinct regional ecological ...

Effects of changing water availability on land use in irrigated mountain oases of Al Jabal Al Akhdar, northern Oman
(2014)
In Oman, during the last three decades, agricultural water use and groundwater extraction has dramatically increased to meet the needs of a rapidly growing population and major changes in lifestyle. This has triggered agricultural land-use changes which have been poorly investigated. In view of this our study aimed at analysing patterns of shortterm land-use changes (2007-2009) in the five irrigated mountain oases of Ash Sharayjah, Al’Ayn, Al’Aqr, Qasha’ and Masayrat ar Ruwajah situated in the northern Oman Hajar ...

Socio-economic characterisation of date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) growers and date value chains in Pakistan
(Biomed Central, 2016-08-02)
Increasing food production to feed its rapidly growing population is a major policy goal of Pakistan. The production of traditional staples such as rice (Oryza sativa L.) and bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) has been intensified in many regions, but not in remote, drought-ridden areas. In these arid, marginal environments dates and their by-products are an option to complement staples given their high nutritive value and storability. To fill knowledge gaps about the role of date palm in the household (HH) income ...
