High-Quality Solid Fuel Production from Leaf Litter of Urban Street Trees
(2016-11-30)
Leaf litter is a growing concern for cities. Due to adherent dirt such biomass is rarely utilized nowadays but may constitute a renewable energy source for communities or private households. Leaf litter from main roads, residential areas and city centres collected by the vacuum technique or the sweeper technique was sampled and analysed for ash content and chemical composition. Ash content of leaf litter collected by the sweeping technique was higher (21.6%–40.1% dry matter, DM) than in material collected by the ...

Fusion of Ultrasonic and Spectral Sensor Data for Improving the Estimation of Biomass in Grasslands with Heterogeneous Sward Structure
(2017-01-21)
An accurate estimation of biomass is needed to understand the spatio-temporal changes of forage resources in pasture ecosystems and to support grazing management decisions. A timely evaluation of biomass is challenging, as it requires efficient means such as technical sensing methods to assess numerous data and create continuous maps. In order to calibrate ultrasonic and spectral sensors, a field experiment with heterogeneous pastures continuously stocked by cows at three grazing intensities was conducted. Sensor ...

The potential of UAV-based remote sensing for the prediction of aboveground biomass and N fixation in legume-grass mixtures
(2020-07)
The world population is growing steadily and with it the demand for meat and animal protein. A major source of feed for livestock is grassland, which serves as high quality and protein rich forage. In addition to permanent grassland, temporary grassland is a valuable crop rotation element, especially in organic farming, since legumes in legume-grass mixtures can fix atmospheric nitrogen (NFix). To further increase the intensification in agriculture, reliable non-destructive measurement techniques are needed as an ...

Technical and Environmental Assessment of Energy and Material Production from Rural and Urban Residual Biomass
(2020-04)

Remote sensing of yield and invasive species in nature conservation grasslands invaded by Lupinus polyphyllus
(2021-07)

Fine-scale grassland monitoring using unmanned aerial vehicle borne remote sensing
(2020-04)
RS is widely employed as a non-destructive methodology to monitor grasslands. Usage of UAV as the RS platform benefits to provide high spatial (fine-grain) and temporal resolution, unclouded data over small grassland extent. Therefore, this thesis evaluated the applications of UAV-borne RS for fine-scale grassland monitoring along with practical farm condition. Grass biomass estimation, predicting forage quality of grass and mapping invasive lupine in grasslands are considered as applications of UAVborne RS.

Impact of sward type, cutting date and conditioning temperature on mass and energy flows in the integrated generation of solid fuel and biogas from semi-natural grassland
(2011-01-21)
Energy production from biomass and the conservation of ecologically valuable grassland habitats are two important issues of agriculture today. The combination of a bioenergy production, which minimises environmental impacts and competition with food production for land with a conversion of semi-natural grasslands through new utilization alternatives for the biomass, led to the development of the IFBB process. Its basic principle is the separation of biomass into a liquid fraction (press fluid, PF) for the production ...

Hyperspectral field measurements to determine dry matter yield and nutritive value of legume-grass swards
(2009-04-29)
Summary:
Productivity, botanical composition and forage quality of legume-grass swards are important factors for successful arable farming in both organic and conventional farming systems. As these attributes can vary considerably within a field, a non-destructive method of detection while doing other tasks would facilitate a more targeted management of crops, forage and nutrients in the soil-plant-animal system.
This study was undertaken to explore the potential of field spectral measurements for a non destructive ...

Determination of yield and quality parameters of energy crops applying laboratory and field spectroscopy
(2010-06-04)
A real-time analysis of renewable energy sources, such as arable crops, is of great importance with regard to an optimised process management, since aspects of ecology and biodiversity are considered in crop production in order to provide a sustainable energy supply by biomass.
This study was undertaken to explore the potential of spectroscopic measurement procedures for the prediction of potassium (K), chloride (Cl), and phosphate (P), of dry matter (DM) yield, metabolisable energy (ME), ash and crude fibre contents ...
