Modification of self-reinforced composites (SRCs) via film stacking process
(2022-02-25)
This work presents the mechanical behavior of self-reinforced composites (SRCs) manufactured and modified via film stacking. For modification, interleaved films made of polypropylene (PP), a thermoplastic elastomer and a polyolefin engage were combined in different ways to induce the elastic modifier into the matrix material. The content of modifier was also varied in two ways. First, the films were produced out of a single material and second out of a compound. So, the same content of modifier was implemented in two ...

Influences on the mechanical properties of SRCs in a combined compacting and back injecting process
(2022-03-03)
In this research paper, the effects of the combined compacting and back-injection process to produce back-injected self-reinforced composites on the mechanical properties of the self-reinforced composites (SRCs) are investigated. For this purpose, the parameters barrel temperature, time of injection and holding pressure were varied for the back injection. Tensile and bending tests were carried out on the SRCs. The results show that the mechanical properties depend to a large extent on the process parameters. The ...

Effects of aging on the stress-induced martensitic transformation and cyclic superelastic properties in Co-Ni-Ga shape memory alloy single crystals under compression
(2022)
Co-Ni-Ga shape memory alloys attracted scientific attention as promising candidate materials for damping applications at elevated temperatures, owing to excellent superelastic properties featuring a fully reversible stress-strain response up to temperatures as high as 500 °C. In the present work, the effect of aging treatments conducted in a wide range of aging temperatures and times, i.e. at 300–400 °C for 0.25–8.5 h, was investigated. It is shown that critical features of the martensitic transformation are strongly ...

Shape Memory Effect and Superelasticity of [001]-Oriented FeNiCoAlNb Single Crystals Aged under and without Stress
(2021-06-10)
The two-step ageing of Fe-28Ni-17Co-11.5Al-2.5Nb (at.%) single crystals under and without stress, leads to the precipitation of the γ′- and β-phase particles. Research has shown that γ–α′ thermoelastic martensitic transformation (MT), with shape memory effect (SME) and superelasticity (SE), develops in the [001]-oriented crystals under tension. SE was observed within the range from the temperature of the start of MT upon cooling Mₛ, to the temperature of the end of the reverse MT upon heating Af, and at temperatures ...

Micromechanical Modeling of AlSi10Mg Processed by Laser-Based Additive Manufacturing: From as-Built to Heat-Treated Microstructures
(2022-08-13)
The unique microstructure of the alloy AlSi10Mg produced by the laser-based powder bed fusion of metals (PBF-LB/M) provides high-strength and high-strain-hardening capabilities of the material. The microstructure and mechanical properties of 3D-printed, i.e., additively manufactured, AlSi10Mg are significantly altered by post-building heat-treatment processes applied in order to tailor the final properties of the parts. Using an accurate computational model to predict and improve the mechanical performance of 3D-printed ...

Influence of the Miniaturisation Effect on the Effective Stiffness of Lattice Structures in Additive Manufacturing
(2020-10-29)
Thin-walled and cellular structures are characterised by superior lightweight potential due to their advantageous stiffness to weight ratio. They find particular interest in the field of additive manufacturing due to robust and reproducible manufacturability. However, the mechanical performance of such structures strongly depends on the manufacturing process and resultant geometrical imperfections such as porosity, deviations in strut thickness or surface roughness, for which an understanding of their influence is ...

The Effect of Fiber Waviness on the Residual Stress State and Its Prediction by the Hole Drilling Method in Fiber Metal Laminates: A Global-Local Finite Element Analysis
(2021-01-15)
In this paper, fiber waviness, as one of the most frequently occurring defects in fiber reinforced composites, is numerically investigated with regard to the formation of residual stresses in fiber metal laminates. Furthermore, the prediction of the residual stress state in the thickness direction by means of the simulated hole drilling method is studied. To this regard, a global-local finite element analysis based on the submodel technique is presented. The submodel technique essentially consists of two governing ...

Additive Manufacturing of 3D Luminescent ZrO2:Eu3+ Architectures
(2022-04-27)
Implementation of more refined structures at the nano to microscale is expected to advance applications in optics and photonics. This work presents the additive manufacturing of 3D luminescent microarchitectures emitting light in the visible range. A tailor-made organo-metallic resin suitable for two-photon lithography is developed, which upon thermal treatment in an oxygen-rich atmosphere allows the creation of silicon-free tetragonal (t-) and monoclinic (m-) ZrO₂. The approach is unique because the tailor-made ...

Structural reorientation and compaction of porous MoS₂ coatings during wear testing
(2022-04-02)
Industrial upscaling frequently results in a different coating microstructure than the laboratory prototypes presented in the literature. Here, we investigate the wear behavior of physical vapor deposited (PVD) MoS2 coatings: A dense, nanocrystalline MoS2 coating, and a porous, prismatic-textured MoS2 coating. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations before and after wear testing evidence a crystallographic reorientation towards a basal texture in both samples. A basal texture is usually desirable due ...

Microcantilever Fracture Tests of α-Cr Containing NiAl Bond Coats
(2022-01-08)
MCrAlY bond coats are widely used as oxidation-resistant coatings on superalloys. The major phase is the thermally stable intermetallic β-NiAl phase. The addition of Cr increases the oxidation and corrosion resistance but leads to the formation of α-Cr precipitates. Both phases are brittle and limit the fracture toughness of these coatings. To study the influence of thermal exposure and the resulting changing chemical composition on the fracture properties, the fracture toughness of both phases is measured by notched ...
