Quenching of High Entropy Alloys after Annealing
(2020)
The effect of cooling rate after annealing at 900 °C on the microstructure and hardness of high entropy alloys was investigated using two typical samples with the chemical composition of Co₁₆Cr₁₄.₅Fe₂₉Mn₁₁.₅Ni₂₉ and Co₁₁.₅Cr₇Fe₂₇Mn₂₇Ni₂₇(Nb₀.₀₈C₀.₅) (at%). The microstructural characterisation and hardness measurements were carried out by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, electron back scattered diffraction, X-ray diffraction technique and Vickers hardness ...

Predicting Flow Stress Behavior of an AA7075 Alloy Using Machine Learning Methods
(2022-09-09)
The present work focuses on the prediction of the hot deformation behavior of thermo-mechanically processed precipitation hardenable aluminum alloy AA7075. The data considered focus on a novel hot forming process at different tool temperatures ranging from 24°C to 350°C to set different cooling rates after solution heat-treatment. Isothermal uniaxial tensile tests in the temperature range of 200°C to 400°C and at strain rates ranging from 0.001 s-¹ to 0.1 s-¹ were carried out on four different material conditions. ...

Effect of Post-Process Machining on Surface Properties of Additively Manufactured H13 Tool Steel
(2018-08-28)

A Screening Approach for Rapid Qualitative Evaluation of Residual-Stress States – Application to Laser-Hardened Microalloyed Steel
(2019-06-11)
Surface hardening and compressive residual stresses are keys to superior part performance in numerous applications. In this context the development of advanced laser surface treatments for new materials and complex sample shapes is a time con-suming process. Eventually, determination of residual stress states by means of X-ray diffraction in the whole surface and subsurface region, respectively, is one of the main time consuming facors in terms of characterization. In many applications the provision of an adequate ...

Consequences of Deep Rolling at Elevated Temperature on Near-Surface and Fatigue Properties of High-Manganese TWIP Steel X40MnCrAl19-2
(2021-11-05)
Due to pronounced work-hardening induced by the complex interplay of deformation mechanisms such as dislocation slip, twinning and/or martensitic phase transformation, high-manganese steels represent a class of materials well-suited for mechanical surface treatment. In the present study, the fatigue behavior of a high-mangsanese steel showing twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) effect at room temperature (RT) was investigated after deep rolling at 550 °C. Results are compared to a former study discussing the behavior ...

Effect of Cell Morphology on Flexural Behavior of Injection-Molded Microcellular Polycarbonate
(2022-05-19)
The quantitative study of the structure and properties relationship in cellular materials is mostly limited to cell diameter, cell density, skin layer thickness, and cell size distribution. In addition, the investigation of the morphology is generally carried out in two dimensions. Therefore, the
interrelation between morphological properties and mechanical characteristics of the foam structure has remained in an uncertain state. In this study, during the physical foaming process, a foam morphology is locally created ...

Constant Temperature Approach for the Assessment of Injection Molding Parameter Influence on the Fatigue Behavior of Short Glass Fiber Reinforced Polyamide 6
(2021-05-13)
Short glass fiber reinforced plastics (SGFRP) offer superior mechanical properties compared to polymers, while still also enabling almost unlimited geometric variations of components at large-scale production. PA6-GF30 represents one of the most used SGFRP for series components, but the impact of injection molding process parameters on the fatigue properties is still insufficiently investigated. In this study, various injection molding parameter configurations were investigated on PA6-GF30. To take the significant ...

Innovative Materials for Novel Concepts for Internal Heat Exchangers
(2018-07-27)
Internal heat exchangers are often employed in solar thermal applications as well as in many other applications that involve heat, and, for the most part, consist of metallic materials (copper, stainless steel). Corrugated stainless steel tubes are easy to assemble, and are commonly used in various storage geometries. In order to significantly reduce costs, alternative materials, such as plastics, can function as excellent substitutes. Alternative heat exchangers for the following examinations using various materials ...

Thermal Properties of Plasticized Cellulose Acetate and Its β-Relaxation Phenomenon
(2021-04-21)
Cellulose acetate (CA), an organic ester, is a biobased polymer which exhibits good mechanical properties (e.g., high Young’s modulus and tensile strength). In recent decades, there has been significant work done to verify the thermal and thermomechanical behaviors of raw and plasticized cellulose acetate. In this study, the thermomechanical properties of plasticized cellulose acetate—especially its β-relaxation and activation energy—were investigated. The general thermal behavior was analyzed and compared with ...

Beam powder bed fusion for direct microstructure design – In-depth analysis of prospects and limitations of the multi spot scanning strategy
(2023)
The electron beam powder bed fusion process generally results in a strong 〈001〉 texture alongside the build direction for Inconel 718. This is a result of prevailing high thermal gradients between the melted surface and the solid material. However, based on specific beam movement patterns, the solidification behaviour can be altered towards an equiaxed, isotropic microstructure. The present study focuses on the “multi spot scanning” strategy directly provided by the machine manufacturer. The operation mode of the ...
