Novel azobenzene-terminated asparagusic acid and lipoic acid derivatives have been synthesised for the formation of photoresponsive self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold(111)surfaces. Monolayers formed by amide- and ester-containing compounds were compared to reveal the influence of lateral hydrogen-bondings on the quality and orientational order in the films. Film formation from solution was investigated in situ by second harmonic generation (SHG). The photoreactivity was monitored using contact-angle measurements, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and ellipsometry. SAMs on gold were further investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS), and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) to determine film quality, substrate bonding and orientational structure.
As their chemisorption on polycrystalline gold is formally comparable to the coordination chemistry of 1,2-dithiolane derivatives towards zero-valent precious metalcentres, a variety of new Pt-complexes were synthesised via oxidative addition reactions to [Pt(PPh3)4].
In the context of the preparation of asparagusic acid the crystal structures of [pipH]2[WS4] and the new compounds [pipH]3[WS4](HS) and [pipH]4[WS4][WOS3] (pip = piperidine) were determined. Hydrogen bonds between the piperidinium cations and the thiotungstate anions play a decisive structural role.
