Morphology-property-relationship of thermo-mechanically graded self-reinforced polypropylene composites
(2015-02-17)
In this paper the relationship between different composite morphologies and their mechanical properties is to be investigated. By manufacturing two different tape-based polypropylene composites in a compression moulding process, four varying degrees of compaction will be generated. The morphological structure is analyzed using confocal laser light microscopy and wet chemically etched specimen cross-sections. The etching process removes the amorphous phase in the polymer, making the macromolecular orientations and ...

Assessment of the changeability of plastics processing systems
(Society of Plastics Engineers, 2014)
Changeable production systems are still being developed, especially in the field of plastics processing. Here, the assessment of the changeability is a decisive factor. This investigation deals with the assessment of the changeability of a modular pilot plant, and derives approaches for the further development of an evaluation system, as well as potential means to increase the changeability.

The Adhesion of LSR Thermoplastic Composites after Storage Tests
(Society of Plastics Engineers, 2017)
The adhesion properties of liquid silicone rubber (LSR) and different thermoplastics (PC, PA, and PP) were examined in this investigation. In order to guarantee the adhesion of both components, an activation (silicatization) of the TP surface, which is a conventional method, was carried out. Furthermore, the long-term stability of the silicatization (storage of the activated surfaces) as well as the wetting behavior were investigated. Moreover, microscopic investigations were performed to analyze the activated ...

Characterization of polyamide 6.10 composites incorporated with microcrystalline cellulose fiber: Effects of fiber loading and impact modifier
(2018-08-14)
Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) fiber‐reinforced polyamide 6.10 (PA) composites were prepared in the presence of an impact modifier (IM), exxelor VA1803 (VA), by melt compounding process. Fiber loading was considered from 20 to 30 wt.%, whereas IM was varied from 2.0 to 5.0 wt.%. Composites were characterized by tensile test, impact test, dynamic thermal mechanical analysis (DTMA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X‐ray diffraction (XRD). Composites’ fractured surfaces ...

Flexible Foams made of Liquid Silicone Rubber and expandable Microspheres
(2019-10-02)
In this study, the possibility of foaming liquid silicone rubber (LSR) was investigated. The foam was produced by injection molding with two different thermoplastic, expandable microspheres. Different properties were tested using the S2-tensile bar, e.g. density, tensile strength, specific tensile strength, elongation at break, stress at 100 % strain and the hardness. It was found that the two types of microspheres used have similar effects on density, specific tensile strength and elongation at break, but differ in ...

Crack path predictions in fiber reinforced composites
(2017-09-06)
Composite materials exhibit beneficial features compared to conventional engineering material, e.g. a comparable strength and a reduced weight at the same time. To fully exploit these beneficial properties within technical structures, fracture mechanical concepts must be taken into account. The global fracture behavior in composite materials is related to the local delamination at interfaces between matrix and inclusion as well as the local fracture behaviors of the constituents. Because of their structure, the global ...

Optimization of thermomechanical processes for the functional gradation of polymers by means of advanced empirical modeling techniques
(2015-02-17)
In this paper, an optimization procedure for complex manufacturing processes is presented. The procedure is based on advanced empirical modeling techniques and will be presented in two parts. The first part comprises the selection and generation of the empirical surrogate models. The process organization and the design of experiments are taken into account. In order to analyze and optimize the processes based on the empirical models, advanced methods and tools are presented in the second part. These tools include ...

A framework for the computer-aided planning and optimisation of manufacturing processes for components with functional graded properties
(2015-02-17)
In this contribution a framework for the computer-aided planning and optimisation of functional graded components is presented. The framework is divided into three modules - the "Component Description", the "Expert System" for the synthetisation of several process chains and the "Modelling and Process Chain Optimisation". The Component Description module enhances a standard computer-aided design (CAD) model by a voxel-based representation of the graded properties. The Expert System synthesises process steps stored ...

The Influence of different die geometries on the Extrusion Process of High-Consistency Silicone Rubber
(Society of Plastics Engineers, 2019)
Silicone Rubber and especially High-Consistency Silicone Rubber (=HCR), are typically processed in the extrusion process. Due to the high requirements in terms of the ma-terial properties and the geometric dimensions, a funda-mental knowledge of the whole process including experi-ences in tool design are essential.
In this study, HCR with different Shore-hardnesses are extruded on a vertical silicone extrusion line with various breaker plates with different length to diameter ratios (=L/D-ratio) in order to analyze ...
