Efficiency and agility of a liquid CO2 cooling system for molten metal systems
(2021-09-24)
In this study investigations on the efficiency and agility of a liquid CO2 cooling system, using expansion bores fed with liquid CO2 by capillary tubes, to form a thermal seal in a magnesium hot runner channel are performed in a test rig. Via temperature measurements the performance of different sets of cooling parameters is tested and cooling rates are identified depended on a varying nozzle geometry. To validate the measurements, the tests are modelled in a thermal simulation study. The applicability of the liquid ...

Annual industrial and commercial heat load profiles: modeling based on k-Means clustering and regression analysis
(2021-05-20)
An accurate method to predict annual heat load profiles is fundamental to many studies, e.g., preliminary design or potential studies on renewable heating systems. This study presents a method to predict annual heat load profiles with a daily resolution for industry and commerce, based on an analysis of 797 natural gas load profiles (≥1.5 GWh/a). To derive heat load profiles, these natural gas load profiles are normalized and those with a potentially non-linear relationship between heat demand and natural gas consumption ...

Casimir-Polder interaction of neutrons with metal or dielectic surfaces
(2021-07-15)
We predict a repulsive Casimir–Polder-type dispersion interaction between a single neutron and a metal or dielectric surface. We consider a scenario where a single neutron is subject to an external magnetic field. Due to its intrinsic magnetic moment, the neutron then forms a magnetisable two-level system which can exchange virtual photons with a nearby surface. The resulting dispersion interaction between a purely magnetic object (neutron) and a purely electric one (surface) is found to be repulsive, in contrast to ...

Examining the relevance of cultural ecosystem services in forest management in Europe
(2020)
The ecosystem services framework has become one of the most important paradigms in forest planning and management as a way to link the multiple provisioning, regulating, and cultural services derived from ecosystems and their benefits to human well-being. Recently, there have been multiple efforts in emphasizing the importance of cultural ecosystem services (CES). However, the consideration of CES in management models remains a challenge. In the current context of increased demand for the joint supply of multiple ...

Impact of Pus1 Pseudouridine Synthase on Specific Decoding Events in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
(2020-05-07)
Pus1-dependent pseudouridylation occurs in many tRNAs and at multiple positions, yet the functional impact of this modification is incompletely understood. We analyzed the consequences of PUS1 deletion on the essential decoding of CAG (Gln) codons by tRNAGlnCUG in yeast. Synthetic lethality was observed upon combining the modification defect with destabilized variants of tRNAGlnCUG, pointing to a severe CAG-decoding defect of the hypomodified tRNA. In addition, we demonstrated that misreading of UAG stop codons by a ...

Social Sustainability Empowering the Economic Sustainability in the Global Apparel Supply Chain
(2020-03-25)
Scholarly discussion on the amalgamation of sustainability and supply chain management has been growing in the last decade. However, an integrated social and economic sustainability performance measurement in supply chains is an emerging avenue in the Sustainable Supply Chain Management discourse. Hence, the purpose of this study is to understand how socially sustainable practices affect economic sustainability performances in supply chains. A survey questionnaire and a conceptual framework were developed to explore ...

On Multivariate Bernstein Polynomials
(2020-08-21)
In this paper, we first revisit and bring together as a sort of survey, properties of Bernstein polynomials of one variable. Secondly, we extend the results from one variable to several ones, namely—uniform convergence, uniform convergence of the derivatives, order of convergence, monotonicity, fixed sign for the p-th derivative, and deduction of the upper and lower bounds of Bernstein polynomials from those of the corresponding functions.

Comparison between Hyperspectral Imaging and Chemical Analysis of Polyphenol Oxidase Activity on Fresh-Cut Apple Slices
(2020-06-29)
The assessment of the quality of fresh-cut apple slices is important for processing, storage, market value, and consumption. Determination of polyphenol oxidase activity (PPO) in apples is critical for controlling the quality of the final product (i.e., dried apples and juices). Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a nondestructive, noncontact, and rapid food quality assessment technique. It has the potential to detect physical and chemical quality attributes of foods such as PPO of apple. The aim of this study was to ...

Mineralization of Phosphorylated Fish Skin Collagen/Mangosteen Scaffolds as Potential Materials for Bone Tissue Regeneration
(2021-05-13)
In this study, a potential hard tissue substitute was mimicked using collagen/mangosteen porous scaffolds. Collagen was extracted from Tilapia fish skin and mangosteen from the waste peel of the respective fruit. Sodium trimetaphosphate was used for the phosphorylation of these scaffolds to improve the nucleation sites for the mineralization process. Phosphate groups were incorporated in the collagen structure as confirmed by their attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) bands. The phosphorylation ...

Explaining Chinese consumers’ green food purchase intentions during the COVID-19 pandemic: an extended theory of planned behaviour
(2021-05-26)
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has strongly influenced consumers’ habits and behaviours, creating a more sustainable and healthier era of consumption. Hence, there is a potential for further expanding the green food sector in China. The theory of planned behaviour (TPB) is one widely used framework to explain consumers’ food choices. Considering consumers’ internal norms, their perceptions of green food attributes, and the shifting consumer behaviour, our study has extended the TPB framework (E-TPB) by adding ...
