Numerical detection of synchronization phenomena in quasi-periodic solutions
(2023-10-05)
In science and technology, dynamical systems can show so-called quasi-periodic solutions. These solutions are composed of two or more base frequencies. The solution in the time domain can be represented by an invariant manifold. To parametrize the invariant manifold, we choose the hyper-time parametrization. If quasi-periodic solutions branches are continued by means of a path continuation, the phenomenon of synchronization may occur. This is important, because the hyper-time parametrization is only valid, as long ...

Showcasing the multifaceted aspects of agricultural transformation: The example of mountain oases in Oman
(2022-11-11)
In the Anthropocene the consequences of land-use transformation on ecosystem services are of growing concern, particularly in fragile areas of mountain agriculture that often represent high nature-value farmland. This study uses a decadal repeated survey approach to analyse the effects of modernisation on oasis systems in the Jabal Al Akhdar region of northern Oman. This rugged mountain region at the north-eastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula experiences a growing influx of regional and international tourists since ...

Neural network interatomic potential for laser-excited materials
(2023-08-15)
Data-driven interatomic potentials based on machine-learning approaches have been increasingly used to perform large-scale, first-principles quality simulations of materials in the electronic ground state. However, they are not able to describe situations in which the electrons are excited, like in the case of material processing by means of femtosecond laser irradiation or ion bombardment. In this work, we propose a neural network interatomic potential with an explicit dependency on the electronic temperature. Taking ...

Mental health and stress level of Ukrainians seeking psychological help online
(2023-11-04)
Due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24th, 2022, more than 8 million Ukrainians have been displaced from their homes. Ukrainians exposed to armed conflict and migration are likely to have low levels of mental health status and seek help. We provide a uniform quantitative assessment of the mental health conditions of Ukrainians seeking help soon after the invasion and resettlement. We screen the mental well-being and psychological distress of 1165 refugees, migrants, internally displaced, and non-displaced ...

Latent heat effects in inductive heating of shape memory alloy fibers
(2023-11-23)
Motivation of the present work is an inductive heating process, used in manufacturing a new kind of improved ultra-high performance concrete. In this novel material, fibers made out of shape memory alloys are used to increase the maximum possible fiber volume fraction, or to create an internal state of compressive stress. In contrast to other works, the underlying microstructure transformation from martensite to austenite is highlighted based on thermal analysis. Dynamic scanning calorimetry measurements are adapted ...

Topology optimization considering self-weight
(2023-11-10)
In civil engineering self-weight loading usually represents the preponderant load case and shall therefore be considered in structural optimization. The present study investigates numerical topology optimization of structural stiffness with a bound on disposable amount of material. A customized topology optimization routine based on Sequential Quadratic Programming was built and is examined by means of known benchmark problems complemented by consideration of self-weight. This study aims to highlight the relevance ...

Adaption of the meat attachment scale (MEAS) to Germany: interplay with food neophobia, preference for organic foods, social trust and trust in food technology innovations
(2023-09-19)
Meat-based diets are still the norm, and vegans and vegetarians represent only a small minority of the population. A transition, respectively, behavioural change towards a diet with less meat can only occur by adopting a positive attitude towards dietary changes based on reasons and motivations. The main aim of this study is to apply the meat attachment scale (MEAS) in Germany in order to analyse if this construct is a barrier towards a diet with less meat in this country. For this purpose, the impact of meat attachment ...

Didymella pinodella: An Important Pea Root Rot Pathogen in France to Watch Out For?
(2024-01-05)
Root rot pathogens restrict pea and wheat production globally. In the EU, pea and pea-based cereal mixtures are being promoted; however, root rot pathogen dynamics in such mixtures are poorly understood. Winter pea and wheat were grown either in pure stands or in mixtures in the field in western France, and the severity of root rot in pea, wheat, and their mixtures, as well as the key pathogens associated with these crops, were assessed. Disease severity was moderate in pea and low in wheat, with no effect of sowing ...

Fibre reinforced ultra-high performance concrete – Rheology, fibre bond strength and flexural strength
(2023-12-06)
Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is characterised by a high compressive strength, high durability, and a dense microstructure. The latter causes UHPC to fail in a brittle and sometimes explosive manner. For this reason, UHPC is reinforced with microfibre reinforcement. On the one hand, these lead to increased tensile and bending loads being able to be absorbed, but above all to ductile post-fracture behaviour. The fibres used are mostly steel fibres.
An essential aspect of the fibre reinforcement is the bond ...
