Societal Evaluation of Bioeconomy Scenarios for Germany
(2022-05-05)
Transitioning to a bio-based economy is widely perceived as a necessary way to tackle climate change and other key environmental challenges. Given the major socio-economic consequences that such a transition entails for people’s everyday lives, it is crucial to take account of citizens’ perceptions and levels of acceptance of these changes. This study applies a holistic approach to gain an understanding of how citizens in Germany assess possible developments associated with transitioning to a bioeconomy. We developed ...

Teachers’ emotional exhaustion before and during the COVID-19 pandemic: Neither emotional exertion nor vacation feeling
(2022-08-08)
In this paper, we use latent change models to examine the changes in in-service teachers’ emotional exhaustion before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result of the pandemic, teachers are confronted with challenging tasks, which can lead to stress and burnout. Resultingly, teachers’ stress experiences have been examined in different studies. However, often the change in those experiences remains unclear. Against this background, we investigate longitudinally how the emotional exhaustion of a cohort of German ...

Assessment of Multi-Satellite Precipitation Products over the Himalayan Mountains of Pakistan, South Asia
(2022-07-11)
Performance assessment of satellite-based precipitation products (SPPs) is critical for their application and development. This study assessed the accuracies of four satellite-based precipitation products (PERSIANN-CDR, PERSIANN-CCS, PERSIANN-DIR, and PERSIANN) using data of in situ weather stations installed over the Himalayan Mountains of Pakistan. All SPPs were evaluated on annual, seasonal, monthly, and daily bases from 2010 to 2017, over the whole spatial domain and at point-to-pixel scale. The assessment was ...

Loneliness and Emancipation: A Multilevel Analysis of the Connection between Gender Inequality, Loneliness, and Social Isolation in the ISSP 2017
(2022-06-17)
The present article analyzes the connection between, on the one hand, gender equality and, on the other hand, loneliness and social isolation. It hypothesizes that modern relational institutions that support gender equality, such as no-fault divorce laws, reduce loneliness in close relationships. This hypothesis is put to the test through a multilevel analysis of the International Social Survey Program (ISSP) 2017. The analysis reveals that the data agree, to a large extent, with the theoretical arguments. The ...

“Some hate it, others love it”: Formation of automatic and reflective affective processes toward exercising in fitness centers and mountain biking
(2022-03-18)
Based on a dual process approach, this study was conducted to test whether automatic affective processes toward exercise are not only interrelated with the amount of exercise but also distinctive for different types of exercise. In a quasi-experimental setting, N = 60 participants (30.87 years ± 7.53; 33% female) completed an Evaluative Priming task to assess automatic affective processes toward exercising in fitness centers, mountain biking and exercise in general and completed a questionnaire about their exercise ...

Comparative thermal analyses of solar milk pasteurizers integrated with solar concentrator and evacuated tube collector
(2022)
Solar-based milk pasteurization enables decentralized maintenance of milk in remote areas of developing countries like Pakistan. Two innovative and efficient medium temperature range solar techniques; solar concentrator (SC) and evacuated tube collectors (ETC) were employed and compared based on theoretical and experimental analyses for an expedient and effective milk pasteurization. The detailed thermal analyses of both techniques were conducted to investigate the useful energy and losses during pasteurization. The ...

Polyurethane-Based Gel Electrolyte for Application in Flexible Electrochromic Devices
(2022-06-28)
For the application in flexible electrochromic devices (ECDs) on plastic substrates, a new polyurethane-based gel electrolyte was manufactured. In this context, the curing behavior and the influence of the proportion of solvent and salt on the ion conductivity as well as the optical and mechanical properties were investigated. Furthermore, the stoichiometric ratio of the polyurethane matrix was varied to influence the ion conductivity. As an isocyanate component, the aliphatic difunctional polyisocyanate prepolymer, ...

Extended Nodal Admittance Matrix Based Stability Analysis of HVDC Connected AC Grids
(2022-05-23)
Motivated by emerging HVDC oscillation issues resulted from the interaction with AC grids, impedance-based stability analysis has become an attractive approach in the de-risking studies due to the capability of black-box modelling and clear physical meaning. However, impedance-based stability assessment of HVDC is typically conducted either from the AC side or from the DC side, without fully considering both AC and DC grid dynamics, thus impairs evaluation accuracy. In this paper, the nodal admittance matrix based ...

Peer Counseling: Method, Metaphor, or Mindset?
(2022-07-22)
Peer Counseling and Peer-to-Peer-Counseling are two common counseling formats worldwide where people meet each other at eye level. Rooted in the Independent Living and Self-Help Movement, “classic” Peer Counseling can be considered a professional counseling service offered by and for people with disabilities. In this article, the question is explored whether Peer Counseling is far more reaching than just being labeled as a counseling method. In many countries, it has now found a permanent place in the counseling ...

Financing Organic Plant Breeding - New Economic Models for Seed as a Commons
(2022-08-12)
Organic seed is vital for organic agriculture. However, organic plant breeding is not keeping pace with the increasing organic production, mainly because of a lack of sufficient financial resources. Therefore, the questions arose: what are the obstacles, and how can they be removed? An analysis of the situation in Europe revealed that royalties from intellectual property rights (IPRs) such as plant variety protection are inappropriate for organic seed. New additional financing strategies were developed based on the ...
