Flexible Electrochromic Device on Polycarbonate Substrate with PEDOT:PSS and Color-Neutral TiO2 as Ion Storage Layer
(2023-04-22)
Electrochromic (EC) windows on glass for thermal and glare protection in buildings, often referred to as smart (dimmable) windows, are commercially available, along with rearview mirrors or windows in aircraft cabins. Plastic-based applications, such as ski goggles, visors and car windows, that require lightweight, three-dimensional (3D) geometry and high-throughput manufacturing are still under development. To produce such EC devices (ECDs), a flexible EC film could be integrated into a back injection molding process, ...

Comparative Life Cycle Assessment of Carbon Dioxide Mineralization Using Industrial Waste as Feedstock to Produce Cement Substitutes
(2023-05-16)
The mineralization of carbon dioxide offers a way to permanently sequester carbon while producing construction materials, combining the concepts of carbon capture and utilization (CCU) and carbon capture and storage (CSS). However, it is important to evaluate different mineralization processes in terms of their environmental impact. This study provides the first comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) analysis that focuses on the utilization of industrial waste materials. We analyzed the climate and material footprint ...

Structural and superelastic properties of Fe–Mn–Al–Ni shape memory alloy sheets produced on industrial process routes by hot rolling
(2023-05-02)
In the present study the structural and functional properties of Fe–Mn–Al–Ni shape memory alloy sheets produced on an industrial process route focusing on hot rolling were investigated. The as-processed condition is characterized by a high fraction of the non-transforming γ-phase, which ensures good workability, but is associated with poor superelasticity. The alloy shows good structural properties with a yield strength of about 600 MPa, which is well above the usual transformation stress related to the martensitic ...

Microbial response of distinct soil types to land-use intensification at a South-Indian rural-urban interface
(2022-03-01)
Aims
Rural-urban dynamics are leading to agricultural intensification practices, which affect microbial ecosystem functions in a soil-specific way. This study aimed to investigate what effects agricultural intensification has on soil microbial communities.
Methods
The effects of N fertilization level (low and high) and crop type (maize and finger millet) on microbial communities were investigated, using a two-factorial split-plot design, at two fields (irrigated and rainfed) on typical soil types (Nitisol and ...

Cold Load Pickup Model Adequacy for Power System Restoration Studies
(2022-10-18)
When a grid section is re-energized after an interruption, the load behaviour can be significantly different from normal operation. In this manuscript, the impact of the phenomenon—known as cold load pickup—is investigated by evaluating 31 time series measured after network outages in Austria and Germany. Its impact on power system restoration and the adequacy of the most common type of simplified model for such investigations is assessed by the time domain simulation of a restoration setting involving the parallel ...

Phenotypic and genetic diversity of domestic yak (Bos grunniens) in high-altitude rangelands of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan
(2022-07-04)
Due to climate change, irrigated agriculture may become restricted in the mountain valleys in northern Pakistan in the future. Hence, the importance of yak (Bos grunniens) keeping in the mountain ranges as risk-mitigating strategy for mountain dwellers will potentially increase. However, little is known about the current status of the domestic yak in this region. We therefore used phenotypic characteristics and 13 microsatellite loci to determine the phenotypic differences and the level of genetic differentiation ...

Neue Rechte, Rechtspopulismus und Soziale Arbeit
(2022-08-02)

Influence of Fiber Volume in Hybrid Short Glass/Cellulose Reinforced Thermoplastic Compounds
(2022-09-22)
Glass fibers (GF) and regenerated cellulose fibers (RCF) are possible partners in the hybrid reinforcement of thermoplastics because of their different properties. Due to the weak bonding properties of polypropylene, coupling agents are used and the fiber volume content is set high to achieve high reinforcing effects. A lower fiber content of GF can raise the toughness properties of a reinforced polypropylene which is investigated in this study with different ratios of GF and RCF.
The composites are tested in tensile ...

Take it or leave it? Investigating the ambivalence and willingness to pay for suboptimal fruits and vegetables among organic consumers in Germany
(2022-10-06)
Organic fruits and vegetables are often visually “suboptimal” because organic farming uses neither pesticides nor synthetic fertilisers to improve the cosmetic appearance of the produce. Despite the organic sector's natural and sustainable image, such foods often never reach the market or are left on the shelf, greatly increasing food waste. The current work hypothesised that an important factor in the rejection of suboptimal food is consumers' experience of ambivalence regarding these products. Data were collected ...

Sharing and Space‐Commoning Knowledge Through Urban Living Labs Across Different European Cities
(2022-08-25)
While the growing commodification of housing and public spaces in European cities is producing urban inequalities affecting mostly migrant and vulnerable populations, there are also manifold small-scale neighbourhood-based collaborative processes that seek to co-produce shared urban resources and contribute to more resilient urban developments. As part of the ProSHARE research project that investigates conditions in which sharing takes place and can be expanded to less-represented populations, we focus here on sharing ...
