Aufsatz Validation and generalizability of machine learning prediction models on attrition in longitudinal studies

Jankowsky, Kristin; Schroeders, Ulrich (2022-02-07)
Attrition in longitudinal studies is a major threat to the representativeness of the data and the generalizability of the findings. Typical approaches to address systematic nonresponse are either expensive and unsatisfactory (e.g., oversampling) or rely on the unrealistic assumption of data missing at random (e.g., multiple imputation). Thus, models that effectively predict who most likely drops out in subsequent occasions might offer the opportunity to take countermeasures (e.g., incentives). With the current study, ...

Aufsatz Dietary Quality of Women of Reproductive Age in Low-Income Settings: A Cross-Sectional Study in Kyrgyzstan

Otunchieva, Aiperi; Smanalieva, Jamila; Ploeger, Angelika (2022-01-11)
Dietary diversity and adequate nutrient intake are essential for conducting a healthy life. However, women in low-income settings often face difficulties in ensuring dietary quality. This research assessed relationships between the dietary diversity, nutrient adequacy, and socio-economic factors among women of reproductive age (WRA) in Kyrgyzstan. A cross-sectional study was undertaken in four locations, including two rural and two urban areas in the north and south of Kyrgyzstan. A survey with pre-coded and open-ended ...

Buch Transnationaler Bergbau und lokale Politik

Bechtum, Alexandra (transcript, 2022)

Aufsatz Environmental and Economic Performance of CO₂-Based Methanol Production Using Long-Distance Transport for H₂ in Combination with CO₂ Point Sources: A Case Study for Germany

Kaiser, Simon; Siems, Felix; Mostert, Clemens; Bringezu, Stefan (2022-03-29)
The use of CO₂-based hydrocarbons plays a crucial role in reducing the climate footprint for several industry sectors, such as the chemical industry. Recent studies showed that regions which are favorable for the production of CO₂-based hydrocarbons from an energy perspective often do not provide concentrated point sources for CO₂, which leads to an increased environmental impact due to the higher energy demand of direct air capture processes. Thus, producing H2 in regions with high renewable power potential and ...

Aufsatz Adoption of Food Species Mixtures from Farmers’ Perspectives in Germany: Managing Complexity and Harnessing Advantages

Timaeus, Johannes; Ruigrok, Ties; Siegmeier, Torsten; Finckh, Maria Renate (2022-05-15)
Many agronomic studies have shown the advantages of species mixtures (SM), but for food grain production, they represent only a small niche. Empirical studies that investigate reasons for SM adoption in food grain production are scarce. Here we present an in-depth study based on qualitative expert interviews with nine farmers. By means of interpretative analysis and reconstruction, socially shared models of SM adoption were built to identify the five main factors for SM adoption: (1) perceived relative mixture ...

Aufsatz Agricultural Management Practices and Decision-Making in View of Soil Organic Matter in the Urbanizing Region of Bangalore

Moran-Rodas, Virna Estefania; Preusse, Verena; Wachendorf, Christine (2022-05-10)
Rapid urbanization and agricultural intensification are currently impacting the soils of many tropical countries. Bangalore is a growing megacity experiencing both issues and their derived ecological and socio-economic effects. This paper seeks to understand how the socio-economic effects of urbanization are affecting soil organic carbon (SOC) in Bangalore’s rural–urban interface. We first compiled information on how management practices affect SOC dynamics and specifically evaluated the effects of fertilization ...

Aufsatz Bridging Actors and Their Role in Co-Managing Lakes: Cases from Greater Bengaluru Metropolitan Region (GBMR)

Lakshmisha, Arvind; Thiel, Andreas (2022-05-12)
Co-management is seen as a means to effectively manage common-pool resources, especially collaborations based on sharing of roles and responsibilities between state and non-state actors. Collaborations depend on certain key intermediary bridging actors who facilitate and coordinate links between these actors. In this paper, we aim to understand the role of these bridging actors in shaping networks of co-management by developing a framework based on certain characteristics such as initiation, position, and facilitation ...

Aufsatz Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 Requires the Bidirectional Hydrogenase to Metabolize Glucose and Arginine Under Oxic Conditions

Burgstaller, Heinrich; Wang, Yingying; Caliebe, Johanna; Hüren, Vanessa; Appel, Jens; Boehm, Marko; Leitzke, Sinje; Theune, Marius; King, Paul W.; Gutekunst, Kirstin (2022-05-31)
The cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp.PCC 6803 possesses a bidirectional NiFe-hydrogenase, HoxEFUYH. It functions to produce hydrogen under dark, fermentative conditions and photoproduces hydrogen when dark-adapted cells are illuminated. Unexpectedly, we found that the deletion of the large subunit of the hydrogenase (HoxH) in Synechocystis leads to an inability to grow on arginine and glucose under continuous light in the presence of oxygen. This is surprising, as the hydrogenase is an oxygen-sensitive enzyme. In ...

Aufsatz Pultruded Hybrid Reinforced Compounds with Glass/Cellulose Fibers in a Polybutylene Terephthalate Matrix: Property Investigation

Kahl, Christian; Schlink, André; Heim, Hans-Peter (2022-03-13)
The fiber type, orientation of the fiber, fiber-matrix adhesion, and the fiber length are very important for the performance of a short fiber reinforced plastic. Hybrid reinforced polybutylene terephthalate and reference compounds were tested using tensile, Charpy impact, and three-point bending mechanical tests. The interaction of regenerated cellulose fiber and glass fiber was investigated using a polybutylene terephthalate matrix at a fiber volume content of 10%. The ratios of each fiber type was varied. The ...

Aufsatz Modeling of fiber-coupled confocal and interferometric confocal distance sensors

Siebert, Markus; Hagemeier, Sebastian; Pahl, Tobias; Serbes, Hüseyin; Lehmann, Peter (2022-04-06)
Laser distance sensors are a widespread, fast and contactless approach for distance and surface topography measurements. Main characteristics of those sensors are given by resolution, measurement speed and sensor geometry. With decreasing sensor size, the alignment of the optical components in sensor setup becomes more challenging. The depth response of optical profilers is analyzed to obtain characteristic parameters and, thus, to value the alignment and the transfer behavior of those sensors. We present a novel ...
