Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 Requires the Bidirectional Hydrogenase to Metabolize Glucose and Arginine Under Oxic Conditions
(2022-05-31)
The cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp.PCC 6803 possesses a bidirectional NiFe-hydrogenase, HoxEFUYH. It functions to produce hydrogen under dark, fermentative conditions and photoproduces hydrogen when dark-adapted cells are illuminated. Unexpectedly, we found that the deletion of the large subunit of the hydrogenase (HoxH) in Synechocystis leads to an inability to grow on arginine and glucose under continuous light in the presence of oxygen. This is surprising, as the hydrogenase is an oxygen-sensitive enzyme. In ...

Harnessing the Potential of Wheat-Pea Species Mixtures: Evaluation of Multifunctional Performance and Wheat Diversity
(2022-03-25)
Species mixtures and heterogeneous crop populations are two promising approaches for diversified ecological cropping systems with increased resilience and reduced dependency on external inputs. Inter- and intraspecific diversity were evaluated in combination using 15 wheat (Triticum aestivum) entries, including line cultivars and heterogeneous populations (HPs), from central Europe and Hungary and one winter pea cultivar under organic conditions. Monocultures and wheat mixtures were evaluated multi-functionally for ...

Agronomic performance of normal-leafed and semi-leafless pea (Pisum sativum L.) genotypes
(2022-03-30)
Pea (Pisum sativum L.) is a major pulse crop important as feed and food. Due to the symbiosis with N-fixing bacteria, it is a valuable component of low-input cropping systems. The traditional cultivation of peas was limited by their high susceptibility to lodging. This problem was reduced, though not completely solved, by a semi-leafless mutant. Almost all modern cultivars carry this mutant. It is still an open question as to whether the lack of leaflets may have impaired the productivity. In organic farming, there ...

Financing Organic Plant Breeding - New Economic Models for Seed as a Commons
(2022-08-12)
Organic seed is vital for organic agriculture. However, organic plant breeding is not keeping pace with the increasing organic production, mainly because of a lack of sufficient financial resources. Therefore, the questions arose: what are the obstacles, and how can they be removed? An analysis of the situation in Europe revealed that royalties from intellectual property rights (IPRs) such as plant variety protection are inappropriate for organic seed. New additional financing strategies were developed based on the ...

Scanning the solutions for the sustainable supply of forest ecosystem services in Europe
(2022-03-22)
Forests are key components of European multifunctional landscapes and supply numerous forest ecosystem services (FES) fundamental to human well-being. The sustainable provision of FES has the potential to provide responses to major societal challenges, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, or rural development. To identify suitable strategies for the future sustenance of FES, we performed a solution scanning exercise with a group of transdisciplinary forest and FES experts from different European regions. We ...

Performance and evolutionary adaptation of heterogeneous wheat populations
(2022-09-03)
The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of heterogeneous composite cross populations (CCPs) to increase sustainability and resilience of wheat cropping systems, a so far largely neglected approach. For this purpose, 10 CCPs originating from one CCP created in 2001 and having evolved under different environmental conditions since the F5, were compared in the F15 and F16 with 10 recently released cultivars and 10 inbred lines extracted randomly from the populations. Field trials were performed over 2 ...

Impact of Pea necrotic yellow dwarf virus (PNYDV) on nodulation, N₂ fixation and yield in faba bean (Vicia faba, L.)
(2022-08-09)
Pea necrotic yellow dwarf virus (PNYDV) is a novel nanovirus in Europe, affecting various grain legumes. The impact of PNYDV on nodulation, symbiotic N2 fixation and yield parameters in faba bean (Vicia faba L.) was investigated at controlled conditions in the greenhouse (2017), on-farm in natural infection foci (2018, 2019) and in a small-scale field experiment (2020). In the latter, the standard variety ‘Fuego’ was compared with the variety ‘GL Sunrise’ in early and late infections. In addition, the analogous effects ...

The potential of metabarcoding plant components of Malaise trap samples to enhance knowledge of plant-insect interactions
(2022-07-22)
The worldwide rapid declines in insect and plant abundance and diversity that have occurred in the past decades have gained public attention and demand for political actions to counteract these declines are growing. Rapid large-scale biomonitoring can aid in observing these changes and provide information for decisions for land management and species protection. Malaise traps have long been used for insect sampling and when insects are captured in these traps, they carry traces of plants they have visited on the body ...

Farming system effects on root rot pathogen complex and yield of faba bean (vicia faba) in Germany
(2022-12-21)
A survey across Germany was undertaken from 2016-2019 to evaluate effects of management system (organic vs conventional), pedo-climatic conditions and crop rotation history on faba bean root health status, diversity of major root rot pathogens and yield. Root rot incidence was generally low and there was no effect of the management system on the spectrum of pathogens isolated. Among the most common fungal species identified, frequencies of Fusarium redolens and Didymella pinodella were significantly higher in roots ...

Description and prediction of copper contents in soils using different modeling approaches - Results of long-term monitoring of soils of northern Germany
(2022-10-03)
Background: Different regression approaches may be useful to predict dynamics of copper (Cu), an essential element for plants and microorganisms that becomes toxic at increased contents, in soils. //
Aim: Our objective was to explore the usefulness of mixed-effects modeling and rule-based models for a description and prediction of Cu contents in aqua regia (CuAR) in surface soils using site, pH, soil organic carbon (SOC), and the cation exchange capacity (CEC) as predictors. //
Methods: Three sites in northern ...
