The Role of Just World Beliefs in Responding to the COVID-19 Pandemic
(2022-02-17)
This study investigated whether people’s personal belief in a just world (BJW) is linked to their willingness to physically distance themselves from others during the COVID-19 pandemic. Past research found personal BJW to be positively related to prosocial behavior, justice striving, and lower risk perceptions. If social distancing reflects a concern for others, high personal BJW should predict increased interest in social distancing. If social distancing reflects a concern for one’s personal risk, high personal BJW ...

Von sub\urban zu Pro:Polis?
(2022-06-22)

The many faces of Post-Development: alternatives to development in Tanzania, Iran and Haiti
(2022-06-21)
Post-Development, a body of transitional imaginaries, is not homogenous, neither in its critique, nor in the alternatives proposed. Given that the term ‘development’ is already highly contentious, the question of what ‘alternatives to development’ might be, becomes difficult to respond to. In this article, we argue that Post-Development can assume many faces that are highly dependent upon their conceptual and geographical contexts. In analysing practices of resistance, contestation and subversion in Tanzania, Iran ...

Societal Evaluation of Bioeconomy Scenarios for Germany
(2022-05-05)

This study applies a holistic approach to gain an understanding of how citizens in Germany assess possible developments associated with transitioning to a bioeconomy. We developed ...

Loneliness and Emancipation: A Multilevel Analysis of the Connection between Gender Inequality, Loneliness, and Social Isolation in the ISSP 2017
(2022-06-17)
The present article analyzes the connection between, on the one hand, gender equality and, on the other hand, loneliness and social isolation. It hypothesizes that modern relational institutions that support gender equality, such as no-fault divorce laws, reduce loneliness in close relationships. This hypothesis is put to the test through a multilevel analysis of the International Social Survey Program (ISSP) 2017. The analysis reveals that the data agree, to a large extent, with the theoretical arguments. The ...

Peer Counseling: Method, Metaphor, or Mindset?
(2022-07-22)
Peer Counseling and Peer-to-Peer-Counseling are two common counseling formats worldwide where people meet each other at eye level. Rooted in the Independent Living and Self-Help Movement, “classic” Peer Counseling can be considered a professional counseling service offered by and for people with disabilities. In this article, the question is explored whether Peer Counseling is far more reaching than just being labeled as a counseling method. In many countries, it has now found a permanent place in the counseling ...

Gender Representations Elicited by the Gender Star Form
(2022-02-28)
In many languages, masculine language forms are not only used to designate the male gender but also to operate in a generic fashion. This dual function has been found to lead to male biased representations when people encounter the generic masculine. In German, the now predominant substitute is the gender star form (e.g., Athlet*innen). In two experiments, we examined gender representations elicited when reading the gender star form (vs. generic masculine vs. pair forms). We found that, following the generic masculine, ...

Living locked down – An autoethnographic approach to strategies of adaption to confined living in north Hesse, Germany
(2022-09-07)
Based on autoethnographic observations and phenomenological descriptions of everyday life, this article develops a theory about the connection between challenging housing experiences and the lockdown situation during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany. A special focus is placed on living in community, i.e. living permanently together with other people. The reorganisation of spatial routines and the bundling of these in the flat led to the development of new methods of everyday life in terms of work, leisure and social ...
