Shearographic Detection of Internal Defects in Austenitic Stainless Steels
(2022-12-28)
Despite the formation of a passive layer, corrosion also occurs in austenitic stainless steels. One of the most common and most dangerous types is pitting corrosion, in which the material beneath the surface is completely dissolved. Since this type of corrosion only produces small holes on the surface, it is difficult to detect without nondestructive testing. This paper presents induction-excited shearography as an optical, nondestructive testing method for quick inspection of inner defects and corrosion. The ...

Metastable CrMnNi steels processed by laser powder bed fusion: experimental assessment of elementary mechanisms contributing to microstructure, properties and residual stress
(2022-12-18)
The complex thermal history imposed by the laser-based powder bed fusion of metals (PBF-LB/M) process is known to promote the evolution of unique microstructures. In the present study, metastable CrMnNi steels with different nickel contents and, thus, different phase stabilities are manufactured by PBF-LB/M. Results clearly reveal that an adequate choice of materials will allow to tailor mechanical properties as well as residual stress states in the as-built material to eventually redundantize any thermal post-treatment. ...

Topology optimization considering self-weight
(2023-11-10)
In civil engineering self-weight loading usually represents the preponderant load case and shall therefore be considered in structural optimization. The present study investigates numerical topology optimization of structural stiffness with a bound on disposable amount of material. A customized topology optimization routine based on Sequential Quadratic Programming was built and is examined by means of known benchmark problems complemented by consideration of self-weight. This study aims to highlight the relevance ...

Effect of Compositional Variation Induced by EBM Processing on Deformation Behavior and Phase Stability of Austenitic Cr-Mn-Ni TRIP Steel
(2020-01-24)
Electron beam melting (EBM) is an established powder bed-based additive manufacturing process for the fabrication of complex-shaped metallic components. For metastable austenitic Cr-Mn-Ni TRIP steel, the formation of a homogeneous fine-grained microstructure and outstanding damage tolerance have been reported. However, depending on the process parameters, a certain fraction of Mn evaporates. This can have a significant impact on deformation mechanisms as well as kinetics, as was previously shown for as-cast material. ...
