Morphological and Genetic Diversity of Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) in the Karakoram Mountains of Northern Pakistan
(2018-07-30)
Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) is a dioecious, wind-pollinated shrub growing in Eurasia including the Karakoram Mountains of Pakistan (Gilgit-Baltistan territory). Contrary to the situation in other countries, in Pakistan this species is heavily underutilized. Moreover, a striking diversity of berry colors and shapes in Pakistan raises the question: which varieties might be more suitable for different national and international markets? Therefore, both morphological and genetic diversity of sea buckthorn ...

Preferential weakening of rotational magnetic anisotropy by keV-He ion bombardment in polycrystalline exchange bias layer systems
(2018-05-04)
The consequences of keV light-ion bombardment of polycrystalline exchange bias layer systems on individual magnetic anisotropies composing the effective unidirectional magnetic anisotropy are investigated by vectorial magneto-optic Kerr effect measurements. Preferential reduction of rotatable magnetic anisotropy as compared to the other magnetic anisotropies is observable, disproving the intuitive assumption of an equable weakening of all magnetic anisotropies due to the bombardment. It is concluded that light-ion ...

Estimation of Vegetable Crop Parameter by Multi-temporal UAV-Borne Images
(2018-05-22)
3D point cloud analysis of imagery collected by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) has been shown to be a valuable tool for estimation of crop phenotypic traits, such as plant height, in several species. Spatial information about these phenotypic traits can be used to derive information about other important crop characteristics, like fresh biomass yield, which could not be derived directly from the point clouds. Previous approaches have often only considered single date measurements using a single point cloud derived ...

Expression of NK cluster genes in the onychophoran Euperipatoides rowelli: implications for the evolution of NK family genes in nephrozoans
(2018-07-18)
Background:
Understanding the evolution and development of morphological traits of the last common bilaterian ancestor is a major goal of the evo-devo discipline. The reconstruction of this “urbilaterian” is mainly based on comparative studies of common molecular patterning mechanisms in recent model organisms. The NK homeobox genes are key players in many of these molecular pathways, including processes regulating mesoderm, heart and neural development. Shared features seen in the expression patterns of NK genes ...

Roots of symptom-free leguminous cover crop and living mulch species harbor diverse Fusarium communities that show highly variable aggressiveness on pea (Pisum sativum)
(2018-02-14)
Leguminous cover crop and living mulch species show not only great potential for providing multiple beneficial services to agro-ecosystems, but may also present pathological risks for other crops in rotations through shared pathogens, especially those of the genus Fusarium. Disease severity on roots of subterranean clover, white clover, winter and summer vetch grown as cover crop and living mulch species across five European sites as well as the frequency, distribution and aggressiveness to pea of Fusarium spp. ...

Lesson learnt from Smart Rice Actions in Indonesia
(Section Specialized Partnerships in Sustainable Food Systems and Food Sovereignty at the University of Kassel, Germany and Federation of German Scientists (VDW), 2018-12-26)
Smart Rice (SR) actions are innovative farming practices derived from climate smart agriculture (CSA) concepts and are directed to comply with mitigation and adaptation strategies to climate change. This study provided information about the plausible implementation of SR actions in Indonesia based on literature reviews and stakeholders’ consultation with key informants work- ing on crop management and climate information. The SR actions recommendations are a set of farming practices applied to fulfill the needs of ...

Dimensioning of Heat Pump Systems Based on Pinch Analysis and Energy Monitoring Data
(2018)
In this paper, typical process chains of metal processing/gear manufacturing are examined according to the pinch method with regard to their potential for heat recovery and their suitability for heat pump applications. The focus is on machine tools and parts washing machines as fluctuating heat sources and sinks. Heat sources at a low temperature level, such as the cooling of machine tools, are becoming increasingly important in contrast to conventional fossil waste heat sources due to the electrification of energy ...

Evaluation of a Stratified Tank based Heat Recovery Loop via Dynamic Simulation
(2018)
Prerequisite for hot water recovery in the dairy and beverage industry is the use of heat storage, such as stratified tanks. Total Site Heat Integration enables the targeting of heat recovery potential, the concrete identification of suitable sinks and source profiles and the dimensioning of intermediate circuits and storages. For a cost and energy efficient storage, the aim to maintain stratification by suitable thermocline control management. Dynamic simulation enables a reliable estimation of energy savings and ...

Predictive Simulation-based Optimisation of Cooling System Including a Sprinkler Tank
(2018)
Prerequisite for an efficient cooling energy system is the knowledge and the optimal combination of different operating conditions of individual compression and free cooling chillers. The performance of cooling systems depends on its part load performance and its condensing temperature, which are often unknown. Recorded energy data remains unused and manufacturers' data significantly differs from the real performance. For this purpose, manufacturer and real data are combined and continuously adapted to form partial ...

Carbon footprint for wheat and corn under Egyptian condition
(Section Specialized Partnerships in Sustainable Food Systems and Food Sovereignty at the University of Kassel, Germany and Federation of German Scientists (VDW), 2018-12-26)
Egypt agriculture is facing a great joint challenge of ensuring food security and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions under climate change. Characterizing the carbon footprints of crop production by life cycle analysis is be critical for identifying the key measures to mitigate greenhouse gas emission while sustaining crop productivity in the near future. Agriculture contributes a significant share of greenhouse gas emissions and concurrently represents a carbon dioxide (CO2) sink; it thus has two fold opposing impacts ...
