The nutritive value of Dichrostachys cinerea subspecies nyasana pod meal as an alternative feed resource for weaned rabbits and piglets in Southern Africa
(2019-07-02)
This study investigated the nutritional value of Dichrostachys cinerea subsp. nyassana pod meal (DCNPM), an abundant freely available feed resource derived from an invasive plant in Southern Africa, for weaned rabbits and piglets, and the ameliorative effect of wood ash extract (WAE) against deleterious effects of DCNPM tannins. In a completely randomised design (CRD), 16 weaned rabbits were randomly allocated to 4 dietary treatments (DCNPM at 0, 5, 10, and 20 %) with 4 replicate animals each, for 6 weeks (Exp. 1). ...

Labor Rights, Working Conditions, and Workers’ Power in the Emerging Textile and Apparel Industries in Ethiopia: The Case of Hawassa Industrial Park
(2019-11)
To be able to participate in the global production network and enhance its manufacturing sector, the government of Ethiopia has been building industrial zones (Export Processing Zones) in various parts of the country. These zones have already attracted substantial investments into the country in the light manufacturing sectors, particularly, textile and apparel industries, as a result of which the country is gradually gaining the potential to become a global textile and apparel sourcing hub. Despite the governments’ ...

MOCCAA - MObile Cloud Computing AdaptAble
(2019-08)
The primary objective of Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) is the support of resource-constrained mobile devices by means of Cloud or nearby computing resources. In general, this is achieved by outsourcing or offloading computational intensive tasks of mobile applications. This allows, for instance, to virtually extend the processing power of mobile devices and, indirectly, to save battery life. In case remote resources are not available or the communication link is broken, still a local execution is possible.

Voting on the threat of exclusion in a public goods experiment
(2019-04-01)
Ostracism is practiced by virtually all societies around the world as a means of enforcing cooperation. In this paper, we use a public goods experiment to study whether groups choose to implement an institution that allows for the exclusion of members. We distinguish between a costless exclusion institution and a costly exclusion institution that, if chosen, reduces the endowment of all players. We also provide a comparison with an exclusion institution that is exogenously imposed upon groups. A significant share of ...

Smallholder goat production in the Namaacha and Moamba districts of southern Mozambique
(Kassel University Press, 2019-01-10)
Goat rearing is one of the most common livestock farming activities in Mozambique and has the potential to play a powerful role in improving the livelihoods of resource-poor farmers. This study was conducted to investigate the status of goat husbandry practices in rural areas of southern Mozambique. Data were collected from a total of 45 smallholder goat keepers in three different villages through questionnaires complemented by interviews. Most households were dependent on crop production and livestock as their main ...

Parameter identification for constitutive models of innovative textile composite materials using digital image correlation
(2019-11-18)
This contribution focuses on an innovative composite material consisting of textile layers made from continuous wooden fibers embedded in a thermoplastic matrix. A finite element simulation of potential use‐cases is planned to support the development process and to study the suitability of the material in an architectural context. The simulation is based on a constitutive model assuming homogenous orthotropic elastic behavior and will be expanded to include multiscale modeling in future research. The material parameters ...

Socio-economic aspects of irrigation agriculture as livelihood for rural families in Brazil’s semi-arid northeast
(2019-12-04)
Along the lower-middle São Francisco River, in the semi-arid region of northeast Brazil, irrigated agriculture contributes to reduce rural poverty. In the framework of the Itaparica Reservoir construction, three irrigation schemes were implemented in the Pernambuco state to compensate the local population for flooded land. Despite favourable production conditions for irrigated agriculture, many smallholders in the irrigation schemes are facing poverty. To identify socio-economic key indicators on farm income, expert ...

System efficient integration of standby control and heat pump storage systems in manufacturing processes
(2019-05-24)
Prerequisite for system efficiency towards an industrial energy transition is the reducing of energy demand on the process level. In typical manufacturing systems with machine tools and washing machines, the proper design of intelligent standby control and heat pump storage system (HPS) represent high efficiency. The integration of HPS is complicated due to high non-continuity, especially when implementing a standby control system. Our approach aims at designing one single HPS for multiple heat sources and sinks. ...

Alexa, Can You Help Me Solve That Problem? - Understanding the Value of Smart Personal Assistants as Tutors for Complex Problem Tasks
(universi - Universitätsverlag Siegen, 2019)
In recent decades, the number of students per lecturer at universities has constantly risen. In these learning scenarios, individual lecturer support for helping students actively acquiring new knowledge is hardly possible. However, active student behavior is necessary for successful learning. Smart Personal Assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa or Google’s Home promise to fill this gap by being students’ individual tutors. In order to understand what students expect from Smart Personal Assistants as tutors and how they ...
