Towards Effective Natural Language Application Development
(2019)
There is a current trend that more and more computer programs analyze written or spoken natural language. For example, DVAs, IE systems, machine translation systems, and many other types of programs process natural language in order to solve specific use cases when interacting with humans via natural language. Amazon, Google, and Mycroft AI are just some of the companies that have produced DVAs capable of interacting with humans via voice. Such NLP applications use techniques from computer science and artificial ...

Promoting abnormal grain growth in Fe-based shape memory alloys through compositional adjustments
(2019-05-28)
Iron-based shape memory alloys are promising candidates for large-scale structural applications due to their cost efficiency and the possibility of using conventional processing routes from the steel industry. However, recently developed alloy systems like Fe–Mn–Al–Ni suffer from low recoverability if the grains do not completely cover the sample cross-section. To overcome this issue, here we show that small amounts of titanium added to Fe–Mn–Al–Ni significantly enhance abnormal grain growth due to a considerable ...

The legitimation of expulsion in development discourse. A comparative analysis of World Bank projects in sub-Saharan Africa
(2019)
Comparing examples from Kenia, Ethiopia and Nigeria, the article examines how displacement through infrastructure projects is being legitimised in development discourse. Three typical justifications are the inevitability of progress, the greater common good and property rights. They are closely linked to elements of development discourse: the transformation of geocultural differences into historical stages, Othering of allegedly backward peoples, the concept of trusteeship and the assumption of the beneficial effects ...

The Sundarbans in Bangladesh
(2019)
Bangladesh is an agricultural-based country. Agriculture contributes 42.70% (BER) in the labor market through 4 categories namely crops, fisheries, livestock, and forestry. Forestry has the most significant role in renovation of infrastructures and balancing the natural environment. Due to human and natural induced threats, the forest resources are in danger and currently, the percentage of forest in Bangladesh is 13.22 % (BER). The sector is still mistreated on the basis of compared to the other three parts of ...

On the Effect of Quenching on Postweld Heat Treatment of Friction-Stir-Welded Aluminum 7075 Alloy
(2019)
This work focuses on the effect of postweld heat treatment (PWHT) on the mechanical properties and microstructural evolution of aluminum 7075 alloy processed via friction stir welding (FSW). FSW is known to be capable of grain refinement in the nugget zone (NZ). Two different quench media (water and air) were employed for PWHT. Regardless of the quench media, the PWHT led to the occurrence of grain growth in the NZ of the FSWed aluminum 7075 alloy. Abnormal grain growth occurred in the water quenched specimen. It is ...

Cyclic Deformation Response of Ultra-fine Grained Titanium at Elevated Temperatures
(2019)
This study focuses on the high-temperature cyclic deformation response (CDR) of ultra-fine grained (UFG) titanium of commercial purity (grade 4) processed via equal channel angular extrusion as a severe plastic deformation method. Low-cycle fatigue experiments were conducted at elevated temperatures up to 600 °C and at strain amplitudes ranging from 0.2% to 0.6%. Besides temperature and strain amplitude, the influence of two processing routes (8BC and 8E) on the fatigue characteristics of UFG Ti was examined. It is ...

Effect of grain size on the very high cycle fatigue behavior and notch sensitivity of titanium
(2019)
The very high-cycle fatigue performances of coarse-grained and ultrafine-grained titanium samples with different geometries at ambient temperature and various stress amplitudes were investigated. Severe plastic deformation improves monotonic strength of titanium at the cost of a loss in ductility. Ultrafine-grained titanium demonstrates a superior fatigue performance compared to that of coarse-grained counterparts in the high-cycle fatigue regime, however, suffers notch sensitivity. Furthermore, in the very high-cycle ...

Parameter identification for constitutive models of innovative textile composite materials using digital image correlation
(2019-11-18)
This contribution focuses on an innovative composite material consisting of textile layers made from continuous wooden fibers embedded in a thermoplastic matrix. A finite element simulation of potential use‐cases is planned to support the development process and to study the suitability of the material in an architectural context. The simulation is based on a constitutive model assuming homogenous orthotropic elastic behavior and will be expanded to include multiscale modeling in future research. The material parameters ...

Characterization of Anisotropic Properties of Hot Compacted Self-Reinforced Composites (SRCs) via Thermal Diffusivity Measurement
(2019-11-01)
The mechanical properties of self-reinforced composites (SRCs) produced in a hot compaction process significantly depend on the process parameters. Only a little deviation of the process temperature or pressure causes the component to act differently under mechanical load. This is a chance and a challenge at the same time, since this process is difficult to handle but by properly controlling the process parameters, the mechanical properties can be adjusted, even locally for one component. In this research SRC are ...
