Is your Perception of "Luxury" Similar to Mine? A Concept Made of Absolute and Relative Features
(2015)
Luxury is a relative feature of goods and services. Despite the many empirical studies that have been conducted, marketing scholars have not agreed on a common definition or interpretation of the term "luxury" so far. This deficit causes improper interpretations and, thus, evokes a kind of growing conceptual confusion. Additionally, the increasing interest in luxury in recent years had contributed unintentionally to the ambiguity of the term. Advertising agencies consciously or unconsciously aim to take advantage of ...

Process and utility systems integration and optimisation for ultra-low energy milk powder production
(2017-04-26)
This study applies a Total Site Heat Integration approach in conjunction with a detailed process and utility model, to develop an innovative ultra-low energy milk powder plant design. The basis for the analysis is a state-of-the-art modern milk powder plant that requires 5265 MJ/tp of fuel and 210.5 kWh/tp (58.5 MJe/tp) of electricity. The model of the modern milk powder plant was validated against industrial data and changes to process and/or utility systems are targeted and implemented into the model to understand ...

Shape But Not Color Facilitates Two-Year-Olds’ Search Performance in a Spatial Rotation Task
(2018)
Children younger than 3 years of age often fail to track hidden objects that are rotated together with identical hiding containers, which might be due to relatively complex paradigms. We examined whether 2-year-olds (N = 28) are already able to track spatial rotations (i.e., by 90° and 180°) if the task is facilitated by increasing the visual discriminability of the hiding containers by means of different shapes and different colors. Children performed above chance level in all conditions except for the condition in ...

Linking entrepreneurial orientation to firm performance in a post-socialist market context: the case of Hungary
(2016)
Entrepreneurial orientation provoked the interest of numerous scholars as well as political and administrative decision-makers. Both start-ups and already established corporate entities are increasingly persecuting new opportunities, products, and business models in order to establish superiority above their competitive environment. The tendencies evince an optimist impact of entrepreneurial orientation on business performance, namely on financial performance. Beyond the aforementioned relationship, there are impulses ...

Total Site Utility Systems Optimisation for Milk Powder Production
(2016)
This study applies the Total Site Heat Integration method, in conjunction with a detailed process and utility model, to investigate three methods to increase the energy efficiency of the utility supply system for milk powder production. Sequentially explored opportunities are: (1) increasing boiler efficiency through condensing economisers, (2) waste heat recovery from the chiller unit, and (3) Combined Heat and Power (CHP) for electricity production. The basis for the analysis is the anticipated future milk powder ...

Numerical Two-Scale Simulations of Damage Evolution at Refractory Materials
(2014-02-25)
Fracture and damage processes on micro- and mesoscale are combined with macroscale simulations applying numerical multiscale approaches. Cracks and grain boundaries are reproduced in cell models that take account of transand intercrystalline crack growth. The global, in general thermomechanical boundary value problem is considered within a continuum mechanics framework. Two approaches are presented combining the scales. Simple processes on the smaller level are described in analytical models including the damage ...

A unified and memory efficient framework for simulating mechanical behavior of carbon nanotubes
(2015-06-01)
Carbon nanotubes possess many interesting properties, which make them a promising material for a variety of applications. In this paper, we present a unified framework for the simulation of the mechanical behavior of carbon nanotubes. It allows the creation, simulation and visualization of these structures, extending previous work by the research group “MISMO” at TU Darmstadt. In particular, we develop and integrate a new matrix-free iterative solving procedure, employing the conjugate gradient method, that drastically ...

Verbal facilitation effects instead of verbal overshadowing in face memory of 4- to 6-year olds
(2015)
Research on eye witness memory in older children and adults revealed that verbally describing unfamiliar faces impairs later recognition of these faces, known as the “verbal overshadowing effect”. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a verbal overshadowing effect occurs in 4- to 6-year olds, too, and whether visualization (i.e., drawing the seen face) might elicit a visual overshadowing effect. Instead of a verbal overshadowing effect, a verbal facilitation effect was revealed with verbal intelligence ...

Girls in detail, boys in shape: Gender differences when drawing cubes in depth
(2013)
The current study tested gender differences in the developmental transition from drawing cubes in two‐ versus three dimensions (3D), and investigated the underlying spatial abilities. Six‐ to nine‐year‐old children (N = 97) drew two occluding model cubes and solved several other spatial tasks. Girls more often unfolded the various sides of the cubes into a layout, also called diagrammatic cube drawing (object design detail). In girls, the best predictor for drawing the cubes was Mental Rotation Test (MRT) accuracy. ...

Introducing the Logarithmic finite element method: a geometrically exact planar Bernoulli beam element
(2016-09-15)
We propose a novel finite element formulation that significantly reduces the number of degrees of freedom necessary to obtain reasonably accurate approximations of the low-frequency component of the deformation in boundary-value problems. In contrast to the standard Ritz–Galerkin approach, the shape functions are defined on a Lie algebra—the logarithmic space—of the deformation function. We construct a deformation function based on an interpolation of transformations at the nodes of the finite element. In the case ...
