Ordoliberalism Out of Order? The Fragile Constitutionality of Greek Austerity (Part Two)
(2020-06)
This is the second part of a two-part post. The first part, available here, considered the historical background of the concept of constitutional order and its relation to the ordoliberal project. Judicial independence was examined in parallel with central bank independence, with each understood as a means of insulating policy from social and democratic pressures and also as a means of enacting and maintaining fiscal discipline and market-conforming order. It also included some preliminary observations on the relation ...

Genotypic differences in body weight and physiological response of local and exotic turkeys challenged with Salmonella typhimurium
(2021-11-02)
To better understand susceptibility and/ or tolerance of locally adapted turkey to salmonellosis, we compared bodyweight, antibody titres and physiological traits based on genotype and sex of salmonella-infected turkeys. Three hundred poults from two genotypes (160 local and 140 exotic turkeys) were raised for twenty weeks. Bodyweight (BW), rectal temperature (RT), pulse rate (PR) and respiratory rate (RR) were measured weekly. Blood samples were collected from each turkey before and after inoculations at week 8 and ...

Agricultural risk assessment to enhance the food systems of the Mbororo minority community in the Northwest region of Cameroon
(2021-10-29)
Increasing population pressure, coupled with the effects of climate change manifested by longer dry seasons, wildfires, and conflicts, threatens the food systems of minority communities. In the case of the Mbororo minority community of Northwest Region of Cameroon, these threats are exacerbated by already existing problems of marginalisation. This study assesses agricultural risks in the global context of food distribution and gross domestic product that also poses a specific threat to the food system of the Mbororo ...

Preliminary assesment on drought tolerant oil palm in semi-arid area
(2021-12-15)
The evaluation of oil palm growth performance and their corresponding effect on drought very crucial in selection of proper parent’s tree. The parent palm that showed drought tolerance and have less effect on oil yield is important for optimisation semi-arid lands usage in future. The Split plot with two replications in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) were conducted and mixed stand with an adjacent control plot. All 19 progenies was evaluated and interaction effects are estimated using split plots analysis. ...

Science–Policy Interfaces Related to Biodiversity and Nature Conservation: The Case of Natural Capital Germany—TEEB-DE
(2020-05-03)
Responding to the UN programme “The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity” (TEEB), TEEB-DE (2012–2018) was a science–policy interface (SPI) set up in Germany with the objective of mobilising scientific expertise for a better consideration of biodiversity and ecosystem services in political and corporate decision-making. The aim of this paper is to contribute to an assessment of TEEB-DE by analysing its objectives, structure, processes and outputs. The analysis is guided by a theoretical framework that takes ...

Antioxidant activity of a mixture of water-soluble tempeh extract with whey powder that has undergone a Maillard reaction
(2021-12-20)
High amino acid content in tempeh and lactose in whey powder can be combined to perform Maillard reaction. So, it can be used to produce functional food products. This is caused by the formation of Amadori and melanoidin as water-soluble compounds which are reported to have high antioxidant capacity and produce a preferred flavor. The general objective of the study was to obtain an optimum process condition in a mixture of water soluble tempeh extract and whey powder with the highest antioxidant capacity (100 mL). ...

Rainfall erosivity, soil erodibility and natural water erosion potential in the Huambo region, Angola
(2021-12-06)
The use of erosion assessment methods is critical for the sustainability of land use in tropical and subtropical regions, especially in countries lacking national information on soil erosion development, which is the case of Angola. This study aimed to evaluate the rainfall erosivity (R), soil erodibility (K), soil loss tolerance (T) and natural erosion potential (NEP) in Huambo (Angola). The R value estimated for a 25-year period was 7463 MJ·mm·ha-¹·h-¹·y-¹. K values estimated from 25 soil profiles, described in the ...

Significado y efectos de sentido. El gérondif francés en el contexto románico
(2021)

Determinants of Willingness to Pay (WTP) for organic fertiliser: a case of smallholder potato farmers in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
(2021-12-01)
The South African smallholder sector is characterised by relatively low productivity due to persistent deterioration in soil fertility owing to declining organic matter and other essential soil nutrients. Consequently, adoption of sustainable agricultural inputs like organic fertiliser is essential. Although there is sufficient advocacy in the adoption of organic fertiliser, the economic linkage between farmers' socioeconomic factors and willingness to pay (WTP) remains under-explored. This study investigated the ...

Drivers of adaptation to climate change in vulnerable farming communities: a micro analysis of rice farmers in Ndop, Cameroon
(2021-11-04)
Farmers in developing economies often struggle to adapt to climate change and their decisions to adapt usually hinges on perception and prevailing socio-economic factors. This study examines factors controlling farmers’ decision to adapt to climate change and evaluate the impact of such decisions on farm output. Using primary data from 138 rice farming households in Ndop-Cameroon, we employ the probit model with endogenous switching regression to investigate the impact of the farmers’ adaptation decisions on output. ...
