Food typology of traditional foods based on millet, sorghum and cowpea from the rural communes of north central region of Burkina Faso
(2023-07-31)
Food vulnerability is a growing plague in developing countries, neglecting local foods. Better knowledge of local foods is necessary to improve their consumption. The objective of this study is to identify the types of local millet, sorghum and cowpea foods in the North Central Region from a socio-cultural perspective. The methodology consisted of organizing 12 focus groups to respond to an individual questionnaire on the socio-cultural characteristics of participants and their knowledge of their millet, sorghum and ...

Female farmers in the Galapagos: An invisible force
(2023-11-07)
Despite the crucial contributions of women to agriculture and food security, female farmers in the Galapagos Islands face persistent challenges that hinder the recognition and valuation of their work. Furthermore, the lack of gender-disaggregated data tailored to their local and contextual realities presents an ongoing challenge for evidence-based policy formulation, hampering the response to their specific needs and challenges. Taking a departure from the dominant quantitative approach in agricultural research, this ...

Influence of Surface Mechanical Attrition Treatment (SMAT) on Microstructure, Tensile and Low-Cycle Fatigue Behavior of Additively Manufactured Stainless Steel 316L
(2023-08-29)
Direct Energy Deposition (DED), as one common type of additive manufacturing, is capable of fabricating metallic components close to net-shape with complex geometry. Surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) is an advanced surface treatment technology which is able to yield a nanostructured surface layer characterized by compressive residual stresses and work hardening, thereby improving the fatigue performances of metallic specimens. In the present study, stainless steel 316L specimens were fabricated by DED and ...

Cooperatives as instruments of smallholder development: Evidence from banana, cocoa, coffee, and palm oil producers in Peru
(2023-11)
Collective action in the agricultural sector of Peru started in the form of agrarian production cooperatives around 1969. Following the collapse of the collectivisation program in the 1980s, external stakeholders helped to form marketing cooperatives in select sectors to discourage coca leaf production. Nowadays, cooperatives are only active in four sectors: banana, cocoa, coffee, and palm oil. Case study evidence of the performance of cooperatives in Peru is mixed, which raises the need for applied research to inform ...

Newly implemented crop-livestock-forest systems increase available water and aeration in soils of the Brazilian Savannah
(2023-11-21)
There is a growing demand for cropping systems that guarantee food production by improving the use efficiency of natural resources such as soil and water. The crop-livestock-forest (CLF) system is a form of sustainable intensification in which biodiversity and yields are increased on the same area. In this study, the physical-hydric properties of a Ferralsol and Cambisol in Central Brazil within the Savannah biome (Cerrado) were investigated 2 and 1 year after implementation of CLF systems. Soil samples were collected ...

Exploring the non-genetic factors that affect reproductive traits of Saanen goats in Indonesia
(2023-11)
Adjustment of trait records for different non-genetic factors increases the accuracy of genetic parameters and enables more accurate selection. This study aimed to investigate the non-genetic factors affecting reproductive traits in Saanen goats at the Baturraden breeding centre, Indonesia. The data of 71 Saanen does from the years 2014 to 2021 consisted of reproductive traits, namely, total birth weight (TBW), age at first kidding (AFK), kidding interval (KI), litter size (LS), multiple birth rate (MBR) and kidding ...

Empowering women agripreneurs through precision agriculture technology adoption: An integrative review of literature
(2023-11-30)
The use of precision agricultural technology has been shown to increase yields while decreasing the farmer’s exposure to risk. Despite women’s important involvement in agriculture in many nations, there remains a technological gap between the genders. Particular focus on agriculture’s essential role in alleviating poverty and hunger. The literature gap in precision agriculture technology adoption by women agripreneurs needs to be addressed. This study presents an integrative review of the literature aimed at identifying ...

Effect of storage temperatures and modified atmosphere packaging on sprouting and quality attributes of fresh peeled garlic cloves
(2023-11-30)
This study was conducted during 2021 and 2022 seasons to evaluate the influence of active modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) at levels of 3% O₂ + 5% CO₂, 3% O₂ + 10% CO₂, 3% O₂ + 15% CO₂, 3% O₂ + 97% N₂, and 5% N₂ + 95% O₂ as compared with passive MAP as a control on sprouting and rooting delay and maintaining quality attributes of fresh peeled garlic cloves during storage at 5 and 10°C and 90 - 95% relative humidity for 20 days. The results indicated that all active MAP treatments were effective in reducing weight ...

Evaluating essential micronutrient content, sensory acceptability & economic viability of formulated sesame (Sesamum indicum), pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) & groundnut (Arachis hypogea) food blend
(2023-08-31)
Food blending involving legumes and cereals that has been widely explored, however, there is a paucity of evidence of the use of ‘neglected crops’ such as sesame oil seed in complementing cereals and legumes to alleviate micronutrient deficiency. A completely randomised design involving food blends as treatments and a cross-sectional survey for sensory acceptability of food blends evaluation was done. Proximate macro- and micro-nutrient composition of substrates and food blend mixes was done using the Association of ...

The Impacts of Different Pea Protein Isolate Levels on Physiochemical, Textural, and Sensory evaluation of Ready-to-Cook Plant-Based Minced Meatballs from Oyster Mushroom
(2023-09-10)
The effects of different ratios of pea protein isolate (PPI) (5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% w/w) on ready-to-cook plant-based minced meatballs made from oyster mushrooms were investigated. Increasing the PPI ratio resulted in higher protein content, while values for lightness (L*), yellowness (b*), hardness, adhesiveness, and chewiness decreased compared to the control. Sensory evaluation indicated that all treatments received overall liking scores ranging from 6.50 to 7.23. The study demonstrated that incorporating 10% PPI ...
