Do spatial climate messages increase pro-environmental engagement? Evidence from a survey experiment on public transport
(2022)
Using a survey experiment among a special sample composed of art house cinema visitors, we investigate whether spatial climate messages increase subjects’ willingness to pay for an inclusion of public transport fares in cinema tickets as well as their willingness to use public transport in case such a combined ticket is introduced. Based on previous findings, we expect emphasizing the positive impact of public transport usage on the local level to have a greater effect on subjects’ preferences for public transport ...

No Chaos in Dixon's System
(2020)
The so-called Dixon system is often cited as an example of a two-dimensional (continuous) dynamical system that exhibits chaotic behaviour, if its two parameters take their value in a certain domain. We provide first a rigorous proof that there is no chaos in Dixon's system. Then we perform a complete bifurcation analysis of the system showing that the parameter space can be decomposed into sixteen different regions in each of which the system exhibits qualitatively the same behaviour. In particular, we prove that ...

Solar fractions of SHIP plants considering the availability of roof area based on OpenStreetMap data
(2022-02-04)
Solar heat for industrial processes (SHIP) can be a key technology to decarbonize the industrial heat demand world-wide. Several national studies use either a bottom-up or a top-down-approach to assess the potential of solar process heat using estimated fixed solar fractions. Due to limited area available for the installation of solar collectors and the reasonality of the load profile, this solar fraction cannot be achieved in all cases. To address this limitation, another estimated factor is used in those studies. ...

Annual industrial and commercial heat load profiles: modeling based on k-Means clustering and regression analysis
(2021-03-19)
An accurate method to predict annual heat load profiles is fundamental to many studies, e.g., preliminary design or potential studies on renewable heating systems. This study presents a method to predict annual heat load profiles with a daily resolution for industry and commerce, based on an analysis of 800 natural gas load profiles (≥ 1.5 GWh/a). To derive heat load profiles, these natural gas load profiles are normalized and those with a potentially non-linear relationship between heat demand and natural gas ...

Numerical crack path prediction under mixed-mode loading in 1D quasicrystals
(2017-03)
Quasicrystals are being implemented in industry since this new class of materials appears to have some peculiar properties. However, the fracture behavior of quasicrystals is not yet clear, which could be a hindrance to its wide usage. This work adopts the generalized linear elastic framework of fracture theory in quasicrystals and develops numerical tools in a finite element environment to compute the fracture quantities. Crack growth is simulated in diverse specimens undergoing an intrinsic mixed-mode loading and ...

Identifying critical demand scenarios for the robust capacitated network design problem using principal component analysis
(2021-11-30)
In this paper, we consider the single-commodity robust network design problem. Given an undirected graph with capacity installation costs on its edges and a set S of scenarios with associated flow balance vectors that represent different scenarios of node supplies and demands, the goal is to find integer edge capacities that minimize the total installation cost and permit a feasible single commodity flow for each scenario. This problem arises, for example, in the design of power networks, which are dimensioned to ...

Heapsort for Equal Keys
(2014-09)

Large-scale heat pumps: market potential and barriers, classification and estimation of efficiency
(2019-12-20)
Heat pumps powered by renewable electricity have a significant potential to become a critical technology to disruptively decarbonize an economy. An essential step towards this goal is the development of an accurate understanding and model of how heat pumps in large-scale implementations perform in terms of economics, energy, and the environment. In this study, the influence of system design and operating conditions on the Coefficient of Performance (COP) of large-scale (> 50 kWth) electric driven mechanical compression ...
