Characterisation of the lactation curve of Gyr and Sardo Negro cattle
(2023-07)
The objectives were to characterize the lactation curves (LC) of tropical Gyr and Sardo Negro (SN) cattle from Mexico for the design of breeding and management programs for these breeds. A total of 3561 records of 504 lactations and 3927 records of 449 lactations were used for Gyr and SN, respectively. Three lactation lengths (LL) were evaluated, namely 240 (240d), 270 (270d), and 300 (300d) days, with five non-linear models (NLM): Wood, Wiltmink, Cobby, Brody, and Sikka. Milk production was obtained at the beginning ...

Geospatial crop yield modeling for climate change risk transfer, impact assessment, and adaptation strategies
(2023)
Changing climate and weather patterns increase the pressure on food production systems worldwide, significantly impacting livelihoods and economies at various scales. Understanding and adapting/mitigating climate change are essential to cope with the adverse effects of climate change. Biophysical crop modeling offers a unique way to assess the pros and cons of different adaptation strategies because they integrate physical and biological principles to simulate the use and allocation of captured resources mechanistically. ...

Effect of Fermentation on the bioactive compound of cocoa Beans: a systematic review and meta-analysis approach
(2023-05-30)
Several studies have found the effect of cocoa bean fermentation on bioactive compounds through various fermentation characteristics; however, none of these studies adopted the meta-analysis approach. The effect of cocoa bean fermentation on six bioactive compounds: epicatechin, catechin, total phenolic content (TPC), anthocyanins, theobromine, and caffeine were systematically reviewed. This study aims to determine which variables that can affect the loss of bioactive compounds during fermentation so that their ...

Estimation of growth parameters in Brahman cattle from Mexico
(2023)
The objectives were to evaluate non-linear models (NLM) to define the growth curve of Brahman cattle in Mexico. The database was derived from weight development control, with live weight measurements (150,932 in females and 286,804 in males) taken in the interval from birth to 1095 days of age. Four NLM were evaluated: Brody, Bertalanffy, Gompertz and Logistic. The selection of the NLM with the best adjustment was made based on the Akaike and Bayesian information criteria. Growth parameters were generated: adult ...

Market-driven harvesting of non-timber forest products and the governance of communal forests in the south-east lowveld of Zimbabwe.
(2023-07)
Despite forests providing a wide range of important products and services for much of Zimbabwe’s population, natural forests are threatened by deforestation. The highest rates of deforestation occur in communal forests. Communal forest resources in Zimbabwe show evidence of increased degradation and signs of a breakdown of local institutions for resources management. These signs of a breakdown of local institutions are coupled with evidence of a lack of any emerging alternative institutions for conservation of forest ...

Regulatory mechanisms of Protein kinase A - Isoform mediated fine-tuning
(2023)
cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) is a crucial part in eukaryotic signal transduction and controls biological processes. With a multitude of substrates, a great variety of cellular functions are regulated by PKA. Regulation of metabolism, cell growth and -differentiation, conductivity of ion channels, movement of sperm cells, embryonic development, neuroplasticity as well as conversion of short- to long-term memory are just examples for the many tasks of the kinase. To achieve and coordinate these diverse functions, ...

Lignocellulosic biorefinery with a thermo-biological pretreatment concept
(2023)
There is great interest, not only in technologically advanced societies, in developing innovative sources of raw materials, especially lignocellulosic biomasses such as cereal straw, which do not interfere with food production. In Germany, 4 – 9 million tons of cereal straw, mainly wheat, are utilized annually, corresponding to an energy potential of 57 – 129 PJ/a. Lignocellulose, found in plant cell walls, consists of hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin, and it requires complex fractionation to enable its polymers ...

Pathogenic Mutations in Catalytic Subunit Isoforms of the cAMP-Dependent Protein Kinase
(2023)
Protein kinase A (PKA) is an integral part in a myriad of cellular pathways and a main effector of the second messenger cAMP. Since its discovery in the late 1960s, PKA has become one of the best-studied eukaryotic protein kinases in terms of enzymatic and structural features. Pathological implications of PKA have just started to emerge. There are three main isoforms (α, β, γ) of the catalytic subunit of PKA (PKA-C) which constitute a holoenzyme (R2C2) by association with a regulatory subunit (PKA-R) dimer. While ...

Cooperatives as instruments of smallholder development: Evidence from banana, cocoa, coffee, and palm oil producers in Peru
(2023-11)
Collective action in the agricultural sector of Peru started in the form of agrarian production cooperatives around 1969. Following the collapse of the collectivisation program in the 1980s, external stakeholders helped to form marketing cooperatives in select sectors to discourage coca leaf production. Nowadays, cooperatives are only active in four sectors: banana, cocoa, coffee, and palm oil. Case study evidence of the performance of cooperatives in Peru is mixed, which raises the need for applied research to inform ...
