Propagation and branching strategies for job shop scheduling minimizing the weighted energy consumption
(2023)
We consider a job shop scheduling problem with time windows, flexible energy prices, and machines whose energy consumption depends on their operational state (offline, ramp-up, setup, processing, standby or ramp-down). The goal is to find a valid schedule that minimizes the overall energy cost. To solve this problem to optimality, we developed a branch-and-bound algorithm based on a time-indexed integer linear programming (ILP) formulation, which uses binary variables that describe blocks spanning multiple inactive ...

Identifying critical demand periods in capacity planning for networks including storage
(2023)
We consider a capacity planning problem for networks including storage. Given a graph and a time series of demands and supplies, we seek for integer link and storage capacities that permit a single commodity flow with valid storage in- and outtakes over all time steps. This problem arises, for example, in power systems planning, where storage can be used to buffer peaks of varying supplies and demands. For typical time series spanning a full year at hourly resolution, this leads to huge optimization models. To reduce ...

Pathogenic Mutations in Catalytic Subunit Isoforms of the cAMP-Dependent Protein Kinase
(2023)
Protein kinase A (PKA) is an integral part in a myriad of cellular pathways and a main effector of the second messenger cAMP. Since its discovery in the late 1960s, PKA has become one of the best-studied eukaryotic protein kinases in terms of enzymatic and structural features. Pathological implications of PKA have just started to emerge. There are three main isoforms (α, β, γ) of the catalytic subunit of PKA (PKA-C) which constitute a holoenzyme (R2C2) by association with a regulatory subunit (PKA-R) dimer. While ...

Orometry, Intrinsic Dimensionality and Learning: Novel Insights into Network Data
(2023-11)
Today, networks are an integral part of our world. Let it be real-life friendship networks or social connections that are based on social media. In this thesis, we contribute to the understanding of networks by studying networks from three different perspectives. First, we adapt notions and concepts from orometry to metric data and networks to gain novel insights from a local perspective. Specifically, we study measures of local outstandingness and propose concepts to derive small hierarchies from larger networks. ...

Towards a Better Understanding of Entrepreneurial Teams: Investigating Temporal Dynamics on Multiple Levels
(2023)
This dissertation investigates entrepreneurial teams in the process of creating new ventures. The new venture creation process is complex. Different actors impact the new venture creation process in various ways, either facilitating or complicating it. The three studies at the heart of this thesis aim to cut through this complexity by examining the social context (i.e., entrepreneurial teams) and the temporal dynamics occurring in more detail. All studies address the conditions underpinning entrepreneurial teamwork ...

Management effects on soil microbial functions at a South-Indian rural-urban interface
(2023-06)
Urbanization leads to effects on many aspects of ecosystems and societies. Among the affected are agricultural systems and, specifically, soils. One of the most evident pathways of urbanization effects on agricultural soils is through an increased demand for agricultural commodities requiring agricultural intensification, hence, changes in management practices that alter soils.
In this context, the purpose of this study was to understand how the main agricultural management practices taking place in urbanizing ...

Cooperatives as instruments of smallholder development: Evidence from banana, cocoa, coffee, and palm oil producers in Peru
(2023-11)
Collective action in the agricultural sector of Peru started in the form of agrarian production cooperatives around 1969. Following the collapse of the collectivisation program in the 1980s, external stakeholders helped to form marketing cooperatives in select sectors to discourage coca leaf production. Nowadays, cooperatives are only active in four sectors: banana, cocoa, coffee, and palm oil. Case study evidence of the performance of cooperatives in Peru is mixed, which raises the need for applied research to inform ...

RENACIMIENTO Y BARROCO – PERUANOS
(2022-04-16)
