Private letters are dialogic interactions that are profoundly shaped by discourse traditions, communicative routines and phraseological units, especially in the salutation and conclusio. The study analyses the interplay of formulaic language and the pursuit of individuality in 16th century private letters written by Spanish emigrants from the New World to their wives in Spain.
