Advice is one of the functions of the wise. The wise persons and advisors in the Books of Samuel make clear that their skills are not without a context, but have to be understood in a very concrete network of relationships and loyalties. This contextualizing of counsel can be shown especially clearly in the figure of Ahithophel. His rivalry with Hushai is entirely determined by open and covert ties to David and Absalom. Moreover, the quality of the advice given is to be assessed differently depending on one’s perspective. The explicit evaluation of the advice of Ahithophel and Hushai in 2 Sam 17:14 has a key role here. Taking Ahithophel as an example, this essay will first of all examine how a minor character is portrayed and functions. It will also contribute to the understanding of the ambivalence of wisdom and counsel in 2 Samuel.
