Kritische Masse oder Wettbewerb?
Die Entwicklung des Anteils der Professorinnen an deutschen Hochschulen im Zeitraum von 1992-2014
Abstract
Das Paper untersucht anhand eines eigens dafür zusammengestellten Datensatzes die Entwicklung des Professorinnenanteils an staatlichen deutschen Hochschulen im Zeitraum von 1992 bis 2014. Überprüft wird dabei, ob die Entwicklungen mit den Erwartungen der Theorie der kritischen Masse oder der Wettbewerbstheorie vereinbar sind. Die Analysen legen drei Zusammenhänge offen. Erstens: die Anteile der Professorinnen an den Hochschulen steigen linear und gleichgerichtet. Dies weist darauf hin, dass die Entwicklung des Anteils der Professorinnen deutlich durch externe Einflüsse bestimmt wird. Zweitens finden wir ab einen Professorinnenanteil von 15 Prozent einen negativen Effekt auf die zukünftigen Zuwachsraten. Je höher der Anteil an Professorinnen, umso geringer fällt der zukünftige jährliche Zuwachs aus. Zudem besteht ein starker Zusammenhang mit dem Jahresdurchschnitt des Professorinnen anteils in allen Hochschulen. Unsere Analysen zeigen: Je weiter sich Hochschulen unter dem Jahres durchschnitt bewegen, desto stärker wächst der Professorinnenanteil im Folgejahr. Umgekehrt gilt aber auch: Wenn sich Hochschulen deutlich über dem Jahresdurchschnitt bewegen, dann fällt der Zuwachs im Folgejahr geringer aus. Drittens finden wir kein exponentielles Wachstum des Anteils der Professorinnen bei Überschreiten einer kritischen Masse. Insgesamt ergibt sich daraus, dass die Theorie der kritischen Masse nicht geeignet ist die Entwicklung des Professorinnenanteils an deutschen Hochschulen zu erklären.
