(Effects of Interleaved Learning on Procedural and Conceptual Knowledge of Learners About Proportionality)
Abstract
While in mathematics lessons the learning content is often treated rather separated, the approach of so-called interleaved learning assumes that in many cases it makes sense to arrange the learning contents alternately to stimulate learning and understanding processes among the learners as well as promoting sustainable learning. Interleaved learning belongs to the desirable difficulties. The goal of the desirable difficulties is to achieve a long-term learning success by increasing the cognitive effort during the learning. The study described in this paper examines the effects of the interleaved learning, when the learning content is treated alternately, versus the so-called blocked learning, when the learning content is arranged sequentially. The study was conducted with seventh graders who learned within an eight-hour lesson unit about proportionality either in a blocked or interleaved manner. The design of the experimental study provided the parallel assignment of learners to both conditions and the measurement of learning success at three measurement times (post- and two follow-up tests). The results of the study show that the interleaved learning in contrast to blocked learning has long-term effects on the conceptual knowledge of learners, whereas concerning the development of the procedural knowledge no differences could be found.
