(Can School Have a Positive Impact on the Development of Global Self-Esteem in Adolescents?)
Abstract
The basic human needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness have repeatedly been examined as possible determinants of a global self-esteem. Nevertheless, studies focusing on the relationship between the development of self-esteem during adolescence and the impact of school on the satisfaction of the basic needs are rather rare. Based on the data of 334 students, this study examines the influence of autonomy granted by the teachers, teachers’ feedback on students‘ competence, and relatedness in the classroom on the subsequent development of self-esteem. First, we identified a dichotomic differentiation between a stable and a declining development of self-esteem over time. Thereby, only a higher degree of autonomy (fifth grade) predicts a higher probability of a stable development of self-esteem from fifth to tenth grade (six measurement times), especially for girls. Additional cross-lagged panel models confirm this result as a unidirectional and extraordinarily clear effect.
