Air dehumidification is carried out in conventional drying and air conditioning systems by cooling the humid air below its dew point and then heating it up to the desired temperature. The principle of this mode of operation involves unnecessary electrical energy consumption. Therefore, in this dissertation, an alternative air dehumidification process is described, in which the air dehumidification is realized by an open sorption process. In the open sorption process, a hygroscopic fluid called liquid desiccant is brought into contact with the process air and is diluted by absorbing the air humidity. In a further process step, the regeneration, the moisture is driven out of the liquid desiccant with a time delay by supplying heat. Solar thermal or waste heat could be used as a heat source for the regeneration process. Areas of application for the open sorption process include both product drying and air conditioning systems where the air has to be cooled at the same time.
The aim of this work is the development of numerical component and system models to describe the heat and mass transfer in an open sorption process. The developed component model (effectiveness model) can be used for the simulation of absorbers and regenerators for different geometries such as flat plates, corrugated plates and tube bundles. In addition to the geometric information, the model inputs are the temperatures and mass flow rats of the fluids, the humidity ratio of the air and the mass fraction of the liquid desiccant. Regarding to the absorption process, the developed effectiveness model can simulate the absorption process both without (adiabatic) and with internal cooling. The model is validated for the adiabatic and internally cooled absorption process as well as for the regeneration process with laboratory measurements as well as simulations of three different models: a physical, an NTU-Le and a simplified model. The effectiveness model developed in this work is implemented in TRNSYS and is used to model an existing liquid desiccant air conditioning system. The liquid desiccant air conditioning system consists of two heat and mass exchangers, the absorber and regenerator, two liquid desiccant tanks and a heat recovery. A mixing between two liquid desiccant tanks can take place under certain boundary conditions. The system model is validated using experimental data with both steady state and dynamic boundary conditions. Based on the validation results, the system model is coupled with a model of solar thermal system and with a model of an industrial building in TRNSYS. Annual simulations are used to investigate the extent to which a solar thermally driven liquid sorption system can be used to avoid condensation in an industrial building.
