Dynamiken in der Kartographie um 1500
Abstract
Auf der Suche nach dem ‚richtigen‘ kartographischen Wissen prallten im 15. Jahrhundert recht gegensätzliche Vorstellungen aufeinander: Die praktischen Erfahrungen von Seeleuten standen gegen die Anschauungen der gelehrten Kosmographen, die neuen Entdeckungen des Christoph Kolumbus gegen die alten Vermessungen des Claudius Ptolemäus, mündlich vorgetragene Erklärungen gegen schriftlich tradierte Einsichten, die Erweiterungen des geographischen Weltbilds gegen allgemein bekannte Traditionen, lokale Verfahrensweisen gegen universale Denkansätze, individuelle Adaptionen gegen den Wunsch nach Generalisierbarkeit. In all diesen Auseinandersetzungen ging es darum, der eigenen Interpretation Reichweite und Relevanz zu verschaffen, selbst wenn die Details ein Geheimnis bleiben sollten. In der Folge entstand ein Konglomerat, das sich aus vielfältigen Wurzeln speiste und aus den Gegensätzen weitreichende Dynamiken entwickelte.
