Warenströme und Logistik in Mitteleuropa - Die Integrationsleistungen der Logistik im 20. Jahrhundert
Abstract
The article begins with an outline of the concept of logistics in the context of mass consumer society. Based on case studies of the Speicherstadt in Hamburg and the Rhenania warehouse in Mannheim, it describes warehouse management as part of logistics. The article distinguishes between bulk goods and packaged goods. The logistics of bulk goods are illustrated on the basis of Rhine shipping, the oil transport in the oil harbour of Hamburg and railway transport services, while also outlining tensions in railway policy between France and Germany. The subsequent part of the paper deals with packaged goods, which emerged as a new category of goods in the 20th century. Their enormous expansion meant they had to be distinguished from bulk cargo, with the beginnings of handling packaged goods illustrated on the basis of Hamburg’s Speicherstadt. The exponential growth of packaged goods overtaxed the railway as a mode of transport. The article thus analyses the expansion of the transportation of packaged goods by truck alongside the problems faced by national railway companies with cross-border transport. The paper explores the logistic systems of egg collection, egg package and egg transport by rail from the Austrian state Galicia to Berlin. The rapid growth of the parcel market is likewise described as a segment of the packaged goods market. Private parcel services have been operating since the 1970s in (West) Germany alongside the postal service. The article argues that there is a strong correlation between the time series of GNP and that of parcel revenues. The paper concludes by presenting the thesis that the extent of the parcel market is an indicator of a high level of development and differentiation of mass consumer society, as is also suggested by its limited extent in the former Eastern Bloc. The paper ends with a section on one way logistics, giving examples in the Roman Empire and coal transport on vessels on the river Loire. The unbalanced container transport relations between Asia and Europe are discussed and a new measure of balance is developed.
