Self-energy corrections in heavy muonic atoms

Self-energy corrections for ls_1/2 levels of heavy muonic atoms are calculated to all orders in the external field using numerical techniques to evaluate the bound-muon propagator. The resulting values of the selfenergy are about 10% larger than previous estimates.

Hyperfine structure and isotopic shift of the n^2 P_J levels (n = 7-10) of ^203,205 TI measured by Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy

Using Doppler-free two-photon absorption spectroscopy, we have measured hyperfine splitting constants as well as isotopic level shifts of the 6s^2 np ^2 P_l/2,3/2 states in (n=7-10) in ^203 TI and ^205 TI.
Calculations for hyperfine constants and electron density at the nucleus have been performed by the Dirac-Fock method. The experimental results are compared with these calculations as well as with
the predictions of the semiempirical theory.

Calculation of isomer shift in Mössbauer spectroscopy

The approximations normally used in the calculation of the isomer shift are compared with the exact expressions using Dirac-Slater orbitals and a three-parameter Fermi-type nuclear charge distribution. Precision laser spectroscopy of the ground state hyperfine splitting of hydrogenlike ^209 Bi^82+

The first direct observation of a hyperfine splitting in the optical regime is reported. The wavelength of the M1 transition between the F = 4 and F = 5 hyperfine levels of the ground state of hydrogenlike ^209 Bi^82+ was measured to be \lamda_0 = 243.87(4) nm by detection of laser induced fluorescence at the heavy-ion storage ring ESR at GSI. In addition, the lifetime of the laser excited F = 5 sublevel was determined to be \tau_0 = 0.351(16) ms. The method can be applied to a number of other nuclei and should allow ...

Relativity and screening effects in heavy-ion collisions

Diatomic correlation diagrams are the main basis for the description of heavy-ion collisions. We have constructed the first realistic relativistic many-electron correlation diagrams based on nonrelativistic self-consistent-field, Hartree-Fock calculations of diatomic molecules plus relativistic corrections. We discuss the relativistic influences as well as the many-electron screening effects in the I-Au system with a combined charge of Z = 132 as an example.

Precise calculations of atomic electron binding energies in fermium

The comparison between the experimental binding energies for the K, L, and M electrons for fermium and the results of our Dirac-Fock calculation, taking into account all tractable corrections, leads to agreement within about 20 eV. This shows that the present method of calculation is an adequate description of this problem and that nonlinear electrodynamical effects will not be present in nature or will be smaller than 1% compared to the values recently proposed. On the correlation between electric polarizabilities and the ionization potential of atoms

It is found that the electric dipole polarizabilities of neutral atoms correlate very strongly with their first ionization potential within the groups of elements with the same angular momenta of the outermost electrons. As the latter values are known very accurately, this allows a very good
(<30%) prediction of various atomic polarizabilities.
