Microstructure of an additively manufactured Ti-Ta-Al alloy using novel pre-alloyed powder feedstock material
(2023-05-01)
Binary Ti-Ta and ternary Ti-Ta-Al alloys attracted considerable attention as new potential biomaterials and/or high-temperature shape memory alloys. However, conventional forming and manufacturing technologies of refractory based titanium alloys are difficult and cost-intensive, especially when complex shapes are required. Recently, additive manufacturing (AM) emerged as a suitable alternative and several studies exploited elemental powder mixing approaches to obtain a desired alloy and subsequently use it for complex ...

Pathways towards grain boundary engineering for improved structural performance in polycrystalline Co-Ni-Ga shape memory alloys
(2018)
Co-Ni-Ga high-temperature shape memory alloys attracted a lot of scientific attention due to their superior functional material properties in recent years. In the single crystalline state Co-Ni-Ga HT-SMAs feature a good pseudoelastic response up to 500°C. However, in the polycrystalline condition Co-Ni-Ga suffers significant grain constraints and premature fracture at grain boundaries. In this regard, crystallographic orientation of the grain being involved as well as morphology and geometrical orientation of the ...

Influence of ethylene oxide and gamma irradiation sterilization processes on the degradation behaviour of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) in the course of artificially accelerated aging
(2024-02-10)
To promote the application of bio-based materials in the field of medical technology, it is essential to conduct additional research, focusing on their long-term performance after sterilization. For this purpose, the study examines the aging behaviour of three poly(lactic-acid) (PLA) materials, sterilized with either ethylene oxide or gamma irradiation, over a two years aging period, in accordance with ASTM F1980-21. During these investigations, a direct correlation between moisture absorption and degradation progression ...

Effect of Crystallographic Orientation and Grain Boundaries on Martensitic Transformation and Superelastic Response of Oligocrystalline Fe–Mn–Al–Ni Shape Memory Alloys
(2021-07-26)
In situ tensile tests employing digital image correlation were conducted to study the martensitic transformation of oligocrystalline Fe–Mn–Al–Ni shape memory alloys in depth. The influence of different grain orientations, i.e., near-〈001〉 and near-〈101〉, as well as the influence of different grain boundary misorientations are in focus of the present work. The results reveal that the reversibility of the martensite strongly depends on the type of martensitic evolving, i.e., twinned or detwinned. Furthermore, it is ...

Exploring the mechanical properties of additively manufactured carbon-rich zirconia 3D microarchitectures
(2023-07-11)
Two-photon lithography (TPL) is a promising technique for manufacturing ceramic microstructures with nanoscale resolution. The process relies on tailor-made precursor resins rich in metal–organic and organic constituents, which can lead to carbon-based residues incorporated within the ceramic microstructures. While these are generally considered unwanted impurities, our study reveals that the presence of carbon-rich residues in the form of graphitic and disordered carbon in tetragonal (t-) ZrO₂ can benefit the ...

Describing mechanical damage evolution through in situ electrical resistance measurements
(2023-02-27)
The fatigue properties of metallizations used as electrical conductors in flexible electronic devices have been thoroughly studied over the years. Most studies use time-intensive characterization methods to evaluate mechanical damage. For their ease of access, in situ electrical resistance measurements are often performed along with other characterization methods. However, the data are mostly used as an indicator of failure and a thorough analysis is usually missing. This work presents some deeper analysis methods ...

Linking through-thickness cracks in metallic thin films to in-situ electrical resistance peak broadening
(2022-01-29)
Measurements of electrical resistance have been used extensively as a failure criterion in cyclically loaded conductive films. However, not much research has been performed on extracting additional information contained within such resistance data sets. This study shows that an increase in peak width evidences a transition from cracks bridging to through-thickness crack formation. A Au/Cr bilayer system on a polyimide substrate is used for data generation but the method is applicable to any material system where both ...

Influence of Cu Addition and Microstructural Configuration on the Creep Resistance and Mechanical Properties of an Fe-Based α/α′/α″ Superalloy
(2023-01-14)
Introducing Cu nanoparticles is an effective mechanism for strengthening and toughening Fe-based materials such as ultra-high-strength steels. Herein, the effect of Cu on the mechanical properties of a novel Fe-based α/α′/α″ superalloy is studied. Compared to a Cu-free reference alloy, nanoindentation reveals an increase in hardness, which was associated with the formation of Cu nanoparticles. Both alloys show room temperature (RT) compressive plastic strain at maximum stress greater than 8%, irrespective of the ...

Additive Manufacturing of 3D Luminescent ZrO2:Eu3+ Architectures
(2022-04-27)
Implementation of more refined structures at the nano to microscale is expected to advance applications in optics and photonics. This work presents the additive manufacturing of 3D luminescent microarchitectures emitting light in the visible range. A tailor-made organo-metallic resin suitable for two-photon lithography is developed, which upon thermal treatment in an oxygen-rich atmosphere allows the creation of silicon-free tetragonal (t-) and monoclinic (m-) ZrO₂. The approach is unique because the tailor-made ...

Structural reorientation and compaction of porous MoS₂ coatings during wear testing
(2022-04-02)
Industrial upscaling frequently results in a different coating microstructure than the laboratory prototypes presented in the literature. Here, we investigate the wear behavior of physical vapor deposited (PVD) MoS2 coatings: A dense, nanocrystalline MoS2 coating, and a porous, prismatic-textured MoS2 coating. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations before and after wear testing evidence a crystallographic reorientation towards a basal texture in both samples. A basal texture is usually desirable due ...
