On the Challenges toward Realization of Functionally Graded Structures by Electron Beam Melting—Fe-Base Shape Memory Alloy and Stainless Steel
(ASTM International, 2020-09-22)
In the present study, an iron-manganese-aluminum-nickel (Fe-Mn-Al-Ni) shape memory alloy was processed on an austenitic steel (AISI 304) build platform by electron beam melting in order to study the feasibility of realizing functionally graded structures consisting of two different materials (i.e., a functional and a structural material). Compression specimens consisting of the processed shape memory alloy and the austenitic build platform in equal parts were investigated. The microstructure was analyzed in the ...

Investigation of residual stresses in polypropylene using hot plate welding
(2020-08-05)
During the cooling process of the molten material, residual stresses appear because the reduced volume of the cooled material cannot fully fill the space formerly occupied by the molten material. The morphology in and around the weld is formed by different factors depending on the material and process parameters. Different morphological structures relate to different mechanical properties. The process parameters and the welding results including morphology and residual stress are linked together. In this article, ...

Effects of blending poly(lactic acid) and thermoplastic polyester polyurethanes on the mechanical and adhesive properties in two-component injection molding
(2022-09-16)
One possible way to increase the use of bioplastics and thus contribute to a more resource-efficient and sustainable economy is to broaden the application range of such bioplastics. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a promising and commercially available bio-based and biologically degradable polymer, which exhibits a high strength and stiffness but is very brittle. Blending with other polymers can lead to an enhancement of the ductility of the PLA. The goal of this work was to show that blending of PLA with a bio-based ...

Process Influences in the Combined Compacting and Back-Injection Process to Produce Back-Injected Self-Reinforced Composites (SRCs) – Analysis via Multiple Regression Modelling
(2021-11-21)
A new process to produce back-injected self-reinforced composites (SRCs) is presented. In contrast to other investigations on back-injection of SRCs, a process is presented which allows compacting and back injection of SRCs in one step where the SRCs are partly consolidated only via melt pressure inside the cavity. The mechanical properties of SRCs depend to a large extent on the process parameters of temperature and pressure during manufacture. These parameters are not yet known for back-injected areas. Sensors ...

Modification of self-reinforced composites (SRCs) via film stacking process
(2022-02-25)
This work presents the mechanical behavior of self-reinforced composites (SRCs) manufactured and modified via film stacking. For modification, interleaved films made of polypropylene (PP), a thermoplastic elastomer and a polyolefin engage were combined in different ways to induce the elastic modifier into the matrix material. The content of modifier was also varied in two ways. First, the films were produced out of a single material and second out of a compound. So, the same content of modifier was implemented in two ...

On the low-cycle fatigue behavior of thermo-mechanically processed high-strength aluminum alloys
(2021)
In the present work low-cycle fatigue experiments were carried out on thermo-mechanically processed AA6082 and AA7075 sheets to evaluate mechanical properties under cyclic loading. Different cooling rates imposed by use of tempered forming tools after solutionizing and subsequent aging treatment led to the formation of precipitates with differing sizes and morphologies. Specimens thermo-mechanically processed in tools with temperatures of 24 °C and 200 °C showed superior mechanical properties under both monotonic and ...

Dynamic Tensile Deformation of High Strength Aluminum Alloys Processed Following Novel Thermomechanical Treatment Strategies
(2020-05-14)
Herein, the effects of a very recently introduced novel thermomechanical process route on the microstructural evolution and dynamic tensile deformation behavior of two different precipitation hardenable aluminum alloys, i.e., AA6082 and AA7075, are studied. The investigated materials are hot formed and quenched in differently tempered tools to reveal the influence of cooling rate. Microstructure analysis is conducted to study the influences of different cooling strategies on the microstructure evolution and prevailing ...

Effect of Compositional Variation Induced by EBM Processing on Deformation Behavior and Phase Stability of Austenitic Cr-Mn-Ni TRIP Steel
(2020-01-24)
Electron beam melting (EBM) is an established powder bed-based additive manufacturing process for the fabrication of complex-shaped metallic components. For metastable austenitic Cr-Mn-Ni TRIP steel, the formation of a homogeneous fine-grained microstructure and outstanding damage tolerance have been reported. However, depending on the process parameters, a certain fraction of Mn evaporates. This can have a significant impact on deformation mechanisms as well as kinetics, as was previously shown for as-cast material. ...

Influences on the mechanical properties of SRCs in a combined compacting and back injecting process
(2022-03-03)
In this research paper, the effects of the combined compacting and back-injection process to produce back-injected self-reinforced composites on the mechanical properties of the self-reinforced composites (SRCs) are investigated. For this purpose, the parameters barrel temperature, time of injection and holding pressure were varied for the back injection. Tensile and bending tests were carried out on the SRCs. The results show that the mechanical properties depend to a large extent on the process parameters. The ...

Characterization of Mechanical Properties, Macroscopic Deformation Behavior, and Microstructure of Functionally Graded 22MnB5 Steel
(2021-03-24)
The focus of this study is on the characterization of the local plastic deformation and failure of functionally graded 22MnB5 plates after hot stamping using an in situ approach. Various forming strategies at elevated temperatures are performed using differentially tempered forming tools to locally tailor the microstructure. By controlling the cooling rate, graded as well as martensitic and ferritic–pearlitic microstructures are obtained. Experimental analysis includes evaluation of the material- and geometry-dependent ...
