Investigating the effects of dietary supplementation with Moringa leaf powder and vitamin C in aflatoxin B1-exposed broilers
(2024-07-15)
This study investigates the use of Moringa Leaf Powder (MLP) and Vitamin C in the diets of broiler chickens exposed to Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) to enhance performance and health. Two hundred one-day old Cobb 500 broiler breed chicks were divided into four diet groups: CON (no AFB1, no MLP), AFB (0.2 mg AFB1 per kg of feed), AFV (0.2 mg AFB1 with 200 mg vitamin C), and AFM (0.2 mg AFB1 with 500 mg MLP). Supplementation with MLP and vitamin C led to improved broiler performance, with AFM and AFV groups exhibiting higher ...

Trade-off between carbon offset and economic benefit: Potential of cocoa-based agroforestry system implemented in voluntary carbon market
(2023-11-02)
Agroforestry systems (AFS) are a viable option for the mitigation of deforestation. Thus far AFS has been recognized and financed through the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) program; however, analysis of the potential carbon credit payment and productivity trade-off has rarely been conducted. This study aims to analyse the potential of cocoa-based AFS in terms of the trade-off of carbon accumulation and productivity in West Sumatra, Indonesia. The trade-off is shown through 20 years of financial analysis between the ...

Agroecological transition in Southern Benin: What challenges for more efficient vegetable farming systems?
(2022-10-18)
In Benin, agroecological intensification and agroecological transition of vegetable farming systems is an undeniable necessity for achieving the objectives of food and nutrition security while preserving natural resources, human and animal health. The present study analyses vegetable farming systems in southern Benin, to highlight bottlenecks and challenges in the process of an agroecological transition and intensification of these systems. Data were collected with questionnaires and interview guides through individual ...

Female farmers in the Galapagos: An invisible force
(2023-11-07)
Despite the crucial contributions of women to agriculture and food security, female farmers in the Galapagos Islands face persistent challenges that hinder the recognition and valuation of their work. Furthermore, the lack of gender-disaggregated data tailored to their local and contextual realities presents an ongoing challenge for evidence-based policy formulation, hampering the response to their specific needs and challenges. Taking a departure from the dominant quantitative approach in agricultural research, this ...

Cooperatives as instruments of smallholder development: Evidence from banana, cocoa, coffee, and palm oil producers in Peru
(2023-11)
Collective action in the agricultural sector of Peru started in the form of agrarian production cooperatives around 1969. Following the collapse of the collectivisation program in the 1980s, external stakeholders helped to form marketing cooperatives in select sectors to discourage coca leaf production. Nowadays, cooperatives are only active in four sectors: banana, cocoa, coffee, and palm oil. Case study evidence of the performance of cooperatives in Peru is mixed, which raises the need for applied research to inform ...

Newly implemented crop-livestock-forest systems increase available water and aeration in soils of the Brazilian Savannah
(2023-11-21)
There is a growing demand for cropping systems that guarantee food production by improving the use efficiency of natural resources such as soil and water. The crop-livestock-forest (CLF) system is a form of sustainable intensification in which biodiversity and yields are increased on the same area. In this study, the physical-hydric properties of a Ferralsol and Cambisol in Central Brazil within the Savannah biome (Cerrado) were investigated 2 and 1 year after implementation of CLF systems. Soil samples were collected ...

Exploring the non-genetic factors that affect reproductive traits of Saanen goats in Indonesia
(2023-11)
Adjustment of trait records for different non-genetic factors increases the accuracy of genetic parameters and enables more accurate selection. This study aimed to investigate the non-genetic factors affecting reproductive traits in Saanen goats at the Baturraden breeding centre, Indonesia. The data of 71 Saanen does from the years 2014 to 2021 consisted of reproductive traits, namely, total birth weight (TBW), age at first kidding (AFK), kidding interval (KI), litter size (LS), multiple birth rate (MBR) and kidding ...

Enhancing crop-livestock systems: Unveiling the impact of leaf stripping on maize hybrid yield in Sundarbazar-Lamjung, Nepal
(2024-03-12)
In local maize agro-ecosystems in Nepal leaf stripping is, historically, practiced as a source of fodder for livestock. However, its effects on hybrid maize have not been studied. The aim of this study was to determine how defoliation below the cob affects the grain and fodder production of hybrid maize and what value the stripped leaves have as fodder for ruminants. Seven hybrid maize cultivars were evaluated for their response to leaf stripping in a randomized complete block design with three replications in ...
